Traveling with teens in two separate rooms and our groups have now been booked in room on separate floors

We are a family of four bringing a friend along. Had planned for the parents to share a room and teens to share a room next door, even paying extra for less desirable (than booking on Expedia) so we would request rooms next door. We were specific of our need and it was granted. Until one room was upgraded. Now one group is on the tenth flor at the back of shop and the other is at the front on the fifth floor. I have talked with five different people and been told t

different things - best resolution - they would downgrade us (which is fine) but no changes have been made and we disembark tomorrow. Any suggestions? What are my legal obligations? Suck it up and my husband and I split up? Ships legal obligations to keep minors close to parents?

I do not think I that I have ever encounter any hate comments here. We do try to be sort of civilized and maintain a modicum of decency.

Just a different angle/thought. I wonder if the teenagers were the ones to request the upgrade Wink

Note: Sent in a humorous thought. No hate mail comments (please).

You can also leave the cabins as is then change occupants per cabin once on board - split up so there are adults in each cabin (they can keep an eye on the mini bar that is also in each cabin). Guest services can make the key changes once you decide who you want in which cabin.

I'd check for an upgrade once on board first then do cabin swaps so you only have to do it one time. We did this on the cruise that just ended 3 days ago.

Good lesson. Thanks for sharing!

We've been "upgraded" on both HAL and Princess resulting in us being put in a cabin that we did not like, would never have chosen and did not consider an upgrade.

Both cruiselines did it without asking us first, ie w/out giving us an opportunity to accept or decline; they simply sent us an email "...inform you of new cabin assignment due to upgrade..."

We've since learned from both of them that to prevent you from being moved to a "better location" as defined by them, is to be sure you select the option to NOT upgrade. That will ensure they leave you in the cabin you select but you will still receive offers for paid upgrades.

It's very likely that the direct booking had the free upgrade option toggled on. It's not something you can see in the booking or your profile (on least not on CCL bookings) but an agent can tell you if you ask.

Lesson learned for me - do not allow upgrades.

Wow .. sorry to hear that. Have never dealt with MSC but have heard things ....

So I guess the best you can do then is to improvise and adapt and make the best of it and enjoy your cruise. Once you are back then start writing letters.

OldGreyWolf - We didn’t request or accept the upgrade. We booked over the phone directly with MSC. A month or so later, we received an email that one room had been upgraded. We called the same day we were notified and we’re told there was nothing that could be done. I called again the following day and persisted; this time I was told our room would be downgraded back to original reservation but never received confirmation. Called again three more times and had no luck. Guest services wasn’t able to help once we boarded. Needless to say, I’m not impressed with MSC customer service. It was hard not to let it ruin the vacation at first but I didn’t did relax after a day. Kids were good and all was indeed fine. Thank you for the advice!

@Kanywait2crooze We did book directly with MSC. We could have saved nearly $1000 to book with Expedia but chose to pay more and speak directly with a MSC rep in order to book two rooms together.

We ran into a similar situation. I had booked through Princess and my sister booked through an agent. Originally we had side by side interiors. When we finally got all our info, my sister ended up on another floor at the tern while we were mid -ship forward upper decks. Sometime agents make deals and since she went through an agent, the line cannot do anything without the express permission of the agent. All these folks work on a commission basis so they don't like to step on each other toes.

Enjoy the cruise.

NEVER book on Expedia or any 3rd party sites. Not even a hotel. Book with the line or a reputable agent.
