Traveling Incognito ...Do you "reinvent" yourself on a Cruise?

1) I never give anyone my full name or cabin number until I am certain I want to get to know them better ... nothing like an unwanted fellow passenger latching onto you ...2) I rarely if ever tell my "life history" mainly because it's a sad one and immediately brings people down - I spare strangers my tragedies, my health and definitely my sex life. 3) I often wear outfits I wouldn't normally wear or experiment with my hair and 4)sometimes if I am traveling with my 6"3 adult son, I tell people he's my bodyguard less they think he's a mama's boy at age 33 traveling with his mother lol.

I just try to be myself on a cruise. I am a little bit more outgoing on a cruise than an land. Maybe it's the relaxed atmosphere. I don't discuss anything really personal with strangers though. I can talk somebody's ears off if the subjects are travel, food or Celtic Woman.

I love it! My creative side yearns to invent a character for myself and see how well I can pull it off. It becomes my game who I choose with whom I play. I have to admit that my academic knowledge allows me to invoke all kinds of details that enrich my stories about my fake background. I deliberately refuse to divulge TOO much, but I've found that the bigger the lie the easier for the gullible to swallow. I once convinced a table of Navy guys that I was on a covert mission as a "defense contractor"--code for CIA.

I am much like most of you, just me. I must admit I am very extroverted and friendly. When we are most anywhere, I will have people stop and ask me the time or directions or for some sort of assistance. This is usually after passing by several other people that might have helped. My DH says I am a magnet for "old folks and weirdos". I think I just look safe and I am usually smiling so people feel they won't be "barked" at. So if you meet me on a ship, prepare to be talked to.Wink

We are Floridians so we don't dress up much for anything. That's why I love to dress for dinners when cruising. Or it could be I've watched too many episodes of The Love Boat lol. We have a friend who is an oncology urologist and he usually chooses to be a different profession while cruising. Otherwise everyone asks him what to do about their colon or prostate. 😆

Love that phrase!

The phrase "putting on the dog" can actually be traced back to the 19th century, when college students at Yale are said to have worn high stiff collars known as "dog collars" as part of required dress on formal occasions

No I don't change who I am. Good or bad what you see is who I am. As my Dad used to say don't go putting on the dog. I'm still not sure what that means Wink

We wear our lives on our sleeves😄😄. Can't recall ever wanting to change things👍

And if a negative thought creeps in, I just toss it into the sea and sail on ...Big Smile

I'm not one to chat myself up much on land. I don't say much about myself at sea either. If that's traveling incognito, then so be it that's pretty much how I live anyway ~~~~ LOL.

Once or twice I reacted to someone who was going on and on and on about a topic that they clearly did not understand; rather they just knew a few buzz words. Is that the reverse of traveling incognito? Maybe. When someone is clearly FOC, I've been known to bring an end to a soliloquy. Often a family member or friend goads me into it by shooting looks like... "Is this guy (or gal) serious?" or "I can't believe you aren't saying anything". I'm not mean in doing it (because it's vacation time for everyone); a quick subject change keeps the mood light. Then I go back to "incognito" mode.

Agreed :) Sounds pretty much like us.
