No Cash

Do all of the cruise lines require you to use your cruise card for even minor charges at the gift shop or using the laundry machines? I like keeping my bill at zero but on Princess, you have to charge even the smallest item to your room? Is that true on other lines?

Yes...everything on the card. I will just add cash as I go or pay it off at cruise end.

Our experience has been yes, credit card is the way to go.

There may be some that allow the use of cash -- a big sum of it -- as a spend down kind of account but I am sure it is highly monitored and large purchases need to be cleared at the POS.

Yes, they do but you can also put money into your account in lieu of a credit card. The credit card company does put a hold of a certain amount of money on your card which may not come off for a couple of weeks later. To try and escape surprises on your credit card, pre-pay as much as you can. Also get printouts of your statement throughout your cruise.
