Is specialty dining really SPECIAL?

I have lived in metropolitan cities in the US all of my life and home cooked meals are great when mom, nana and aunties are the best chefs. Nevertheless, we dined at restaurants several times a week to experience many different types of international cuisine. There was never a buffet in my neighborhood. I cannot think of a time in the last 20-years when a family member, friend or colleague called me up and said "Let's go to a buffet tonight". Thus, why would I eat at the buffet on a ship?

I see the buffet (gen-pop) as an inclusive option - not an obligation, that I never take advantage of -- when I walk in and see the crowds of people and the unseasoned food -- I am not enticed to eat anything. In many cases room service is better than the buffet as I have heard.

I do not see going to a restaurant as a SPECIAL event. It is par for course (like the clubhouse) and I expect to pay more when dining out.

What are your thoughts on "SPECIALTY" dining?

Thanks for sharing your experience. I have never sailed Celebrity and in the next two weeks I have reservations and be able to experience Le Pitite Chef in Barcelona at my hotel the night before my transatlantic cruise on Virgin Voyages Resillent Lady. In route to Miami one of the ports is Santa Cruz De Tenerife, Canary Islands where I have a 2nd dinner resy to compare.

As you are probably aware Le Petite Chef has 76 locations around the world including the USA. While experiences like this one are super fun. To my point this is not a unique experience or special just another good night at dinner on a cruise, in New York, Philadelphia, Miam, LA, Las Vegas, Nashville, London, Milan, Rome, Sydney and the list goes on...

As for the buffet, there is no chip on my shoulder -- I have certain food alergies and I have no clue what is in the sauces that cover most dishes -- I prefer not to utilize my EPI pen on a cruise as that would require and medical evacuationCrying

Looks good!

Thanks for sharing your experience, AuntPinkie

Such a nice memory.

Everybody has their own preferences. While you do not like the buffet, thousands here do enjoy it - myself being one of them.

Re: specialty dining. I only have three data points currently. Princess Cruises Crown Grill. The meal I had I rate in the top five meals I ever had the pleasure of enjoying. Second best. Celebrity Edge Le Petite Chef. The most pleasure I have had being entertained between courses. Third best. Princess Sabatini's. Perhaps the most filling meal I ever had. One of the specialty desserts - the chocolate bomb - was sold out when we wanted to delight our senses. Sabatini's delivered one of these chocolate bombs to each of our cabins the next day.

IMO - if you go with the right attitude, specialty dining can be a memorable experience. If you go with a chip on your shoulder - nothing will please you.

Re: room service. Only if I do not want to be seen enjoying myself in public. The most selfish, lonely meal is in the cabin alone. But you enjoy your choices.

We have eaten at the "steak house" when is was given as a perk or part of a package we were buying anyway. The only time, out of pocket, has been the "Chef's Table". Those were definately worth it (although I don't think I could actually eat that much in one sitting now).

As for the buffet: I usually find something that appeals to me. The biggest mistake people seem to make is that they look at one buffet area when there usually are at least two. I tend prefer a lighter lunch and breakfast so the buffet works for me.
