Has anyone ever been to the Azores islands?

Has anyone ever been to the Azores, on a cruise stop or otherwise? I learned about these islands last year and ever since I'm determined to go someday - preferably on a land vacation but I would take a port stop there on a TA cruise, too!

If so, did you like it? What did you do? To me they feel like a hidden treasure, I don't think many people I know know about them or have been there.

This is one of the port stops for Mardi Gras Transatlantic & I am looking forward to it very much!! From the pics I've seen it looks amazing

Yes they are so intriguing to me! I don't have plans to go yet but hopefully within the next several years I can make something happen. Happy This year is going to be mostly land travels in the US for me! When I do (hopefully) visit the Azores I want to stay a while, it sounds like a nice relaxing type of place.

Yes! This past Nov 2018, we did a transatlantic on Princess and stopped at an Azore island. We did a Jeep tour of Ponta Delgada that we booked through princess. It was amazing and we would do it again. We saw some incredible scenery, stopped at a local coffee shop for local cuisine and have great pictures / memories.

Your post tweeked my curiosity so I did a little research on the Azores and found it to be quite the interesting place. Safe travels.

I have had port calls in the Azores twice on Transatlantic cruises. They are beautiful, very lush and green. One time we did the island tour of Ponta Delgada including the Volcanic lakes. The other time we did a wine and cheese tasting in town. Both were enjoyable. I'm not sure I'd want to spend a week there but it is a great port with some good excursion or nice to just walk around the charming port town.

We were supposed to visit there a year ago last December, but Atlantic storms required the Captain to deviate south more, we were doing a west TA. In April 1997 we ported there for a day going east. Nice day tour, but hard to remember all the detail, other than the Azores seemed pretty lush and a lot like the Madeira Islands. The Azores are further west though and about 200 miles further north than Madeira.

A few years ago we had a repo from Fla to UK was supposed to stop there but we had to cancel our plans. Have not tried it again yet but it is somewhere we would like to see.

I fully intend on being sober when we get there on Easter Sunday.

Pouring myself back on board at the end of the day is another matter entirely!

We are booked to tour the Crater Lakes, Gardens and Pineapple Greenhouse for half a day, then look for restaurants and somewhere to quench my thirst.

Normally a fuel stop for going across the pond, I have been a couple of times in my youth (many years ago) so I can only tell you about the drinking houses...

However, as I recall in my sober bits, worth a look

Not yet, but in a couple of months!
