CRUISING HOMEPORTS MOVED FROM BALTIMORE

CCL Legend was in the middle of a cruise, will now return to Norfolk VA. Christine Duffy announced passengers will get "complimentary" bus transportation back to Baltimore (if they want to I guess) 233 miles away. CCL Pride sails out of Baltimore, as does RCL, NCL, and American. First order of business is to reopen the port...after the "investigations" (and the politicians) are finished...the lawsuits haven't even begun......Thoughts are with those lost, just working stiffs filling potholes...everyone else is merely inconvenienced.....for a looooooooooong time...........let the finger pointing begin.

Don't know exactly who sounded that MAYDAY, but who ever it was and folks who stopped traffic should all get medals...

I have about 25 more years, at a minimum, before I can live that sort of life....

Perhaps sanity did prevail...Probably too late for a career change now...

No mistake...sanity prevailed...not counting cruising, I lean toward a/c, a working remote, the big screen and my recliner...(oh yeh, the fridge is a only a few steps away)..Did the other stuff a thousand years ago in another life, dunno who THAT guy was.......THIS is way better...

I definately made a mistake by not becoming an underwater welder when I was afforded the opportunity...although, the current 43 degree water temp is not my idea of a good time. Im better suited to the 73 in august...

Yeh, been following it more out of idle curiousity than anything else...everybody wants in on the act...do news conferences. spin it all....course no news outlet will actually talk to the divers and welders and barge crew doing all the dangerous dirty work...(try watching "ENGINEERING CATASTROPHES" on TV...THATS an education in screwing up!) but anyway apparently they're going to try to remove enough to open a channel of sorts, but no one is sure just how large a ship it will be able to accommodate...its alot to ask those crews to keep working with a 100,000 tonner passing by. And when (If) they can recover any of those poor guys on it when it went down, everything will stop anyway.....as it should. Probably take longer than most experts will allow just to open a passage. Actually rebuild it? HAH! those construction company pooh bahs and crews can send their HS kids through college on this one.....The Fed gave them the equivalent of a blank check.....

Ive heard the same about RCI.

Im also hearing the port channel wont be cleared for several months, unless the Fed, and/or USNavy steps up. But that info is also several days old.

On the Shipmate APP, someone sailing on Royal April 12th said he had an email stating: they are relocating to Norfolk, $75 OBC, AND $200 travel compensation. That’s the only thing I’ve heard.

100% agree with you there AP. I did forget the $100 OBC that he mentioned for those that make it to the sailing. Also somewhere I read that they were looking for other pier options there in Baltimore. I looked on Google Earth yesterday to see the bridge location and I did see several pier areas that *might* possibly be used, but most looked like they would be hard pressed to setup a facility to handle embarkation and customs for debarkation.

First, I wonder how he got to be the "unofficial/official spokesperson" for CCL in the first place...

Second, we've had ships moved from terminal to terminal to terminal, arriving and departing from different places in the port, with no notice...SURPRISE!!! Lack of notification and or poor planning seems to be the norm in the corporate world when it comes to the treatment of "the great unwashed"..especially when it comes to unplanned "events".....Data breaches are a particular pet peeve of mine, when you find out you're involved in one 6 months AFTER the fact. But I digress....again...

I agree with you they could have been a bit more "forgiving" for lack of a better term...nevertheless, it is what it is...if you "expect" a better plan, you'll only be disappointed more...

I wanted to watch John Heald's video reguarding this topic before commenting: There is so much that goes into moving a "home port" that we never see. The fact that Carnival has been quick to find one and trying to get passengers to/from Baltimore/Norfolk is positive. They've given passengrers time to alter their travel plans, but not offered to help with payment of the changes. I have yet to read anything from any other cruise lines that sail out of Baltimore. I "heard" that they are waiting to see what Baltimore says. It seems that that will be a shorter notice to adjust travel plans than Carnival is giving. Also there is a small OBC of $100 for the current cruiseres. While it would be helpful to have a total refund if you can't switch your travel plans, it isn't going to happen from Carnival. Maybe Royal will? I think that given the situation and uncertainty, Carnival is doing a reasonable job. There will be those that want more and may try to get more through legal channels. However, if ever there was an examle of a reason to have travel insurance; this is it!

Compared to those who died, this is a simply an inconvience.

Interesting comments from John Heald this morning. For the cruise scheduled to leave Baltimore Sunday, it will leave from Norfolk. Carnival will be offering a free shuttle back to Baltimore for people on that cruise. No provisions on getting them to Norfolk, just getting them back to Baltimore upon their return. If they cannot get to Norfolk on Sunday, SOL, no refunds, no future cruise credits. They are however giving them an extra 2 hours to make it to the ship, though Baltimore is 4 hours from Norfolk by road.

I guess somewhere in their lengthy ultra-fine cruise contract is a clause that says sorry if you booked a cruise out of New York and we moved the ship to Los Angeles you better find a way to get there.

Maybe I'm being too hard on CCL, but I think refunds and/or FCC is in order here.
