Most walls and doors are metal but there may be a plastic coating covering some. We always bring a magnetic whiteboard which sticks on most walls or the back of the door for leaving messages for each other. We have also used it to leave notes for the steward. If you let him know on the first day about it you can leave him notes instead of trying to find him.

I also like to decorate our cabin door. Just makes it festive. Found out since our last cruise that you can no longer use 2 sided tape as you could in the past. Now Carnival guidelines say you need to use magnets or command strips. Found both at our local Dollar Tree. Not sure about rules on hanging materials for other cruise lines.
