Yep, aft is a direction or description, not a place. (But folks will know what you mean if you use it as a place.)
You go aft you go toward the "stern". The stern isn't the "aft".

AFT is short for DRAFT. It's the beer that comes out of the taps. Bartender, I'll have another aft !
In Northern NJ, aft, is short for "have to" as in I have to go home, becomes, I af-t go home, or my dad will be po'd. Or, chuck me the ball so I don't af-t kick your a$$.
In a British Pub it's a Pont of Aft.

Yes, it is the back of the ship.
Bow (or Fore) comes before, and Aft comes Afterwards.
Port is Left (4 letters) and starboard is Right. (of course, this is only when facing the front (bow) of the ship.
The pointy end of the ship is the bow, the round end or the back of the ship is aft. Starboard is the right side of the ship and port is the left side while facing the bow.
