Celebrity Century

December 2014 - 7 Night Tasmania (Sydney Roundtrip) Cruise on Celebrity Century

Did a small family cruise on the Century and it was a fantastic experience. Honestly had my doubts at first as Celebrity is often billed as a cruise for older folks and sometimes a bit too formal. Dinners were alot more formal than the likes of Royal Carribbean but at the same time the food and service reflected this. The dining room was stunning and well worth it alone. The staff were amazing and the boat itself had plenty to do - I think we were among the youngest on the ship and we still had a fantastic time and would definitely do it again. Only small complaint would be that the points earned for cruising do not carry to your RCI account even tho they are the same company. But fantastic ship and a fantastic cruise.

Fantastic older ship but very well run and the staff were fantastic. Rough seas proved a challenge but the ship held well and I loved it. I am alot younger than alot of the other cruisers on board this particular sailing but it was fantastic.

Cruise tips

Akaroa, New Zealand

Akaroa was a stop on our cruise not too long after Christchurch had suffered from the earthquake. It's a small French influenced town where alot of the locals still speak French as a first language. The gardens and houses are all decorated and blooming with flowers and it is obvious the locals pride themselves in their beautiful looking town. Take a walk up to the light house for a fantastic panoramic photo of the Bay. And if your feeling adventurous and up for it the Dolphin Experience with the Hector's Nose Dolphins ranks up there with some of the best memories I have ever had. A truly remarkable experience - they are the worlds smallest dolphins and an endangered species. After this experience I purchased a GoPro just because it was surreal. I purchased the photos package and figured I was a 1/4 of the way I may as well get a GoPro for future trips. A must do! Tick it off your bucket list!

Esperance, Australia

Esperance is a beautiful little beach town on the South West of Australia. Honestly not much to do here excursion wise but get your towel and sunscreen and head for a walk around the town check out the old tanks for a photo and then enjoy the beach and pristine blue waters. Honestly one of the most relaxing destinations I have been to.

Wellington, New Zealand

Some of the reviews here astound me. People are either fickle or just daft. It's called Windy Wellington. The weather is in the name... Beautiful city we took a walk around the museums which were beautiful and some of the Islands Maori history and legends are amazing. The tram was an experience too worth trying once. As a massive Lord of the Rings fan a trip to Weta Cave is a must! It's free and the sculpture and details these guys put into the movie props is ridiculous. It is a must see!

Picton, New Zealand

Beautiful little town on the Southern tip of the North Island. Everyone in the town was very friendly and nice to get out and walk around. Didn't bother with an excursions here just enjoyed the small town and the amazing Kiwis who are so friendly! Try some of the local beers and wines and enjoy the sunshine.

Mare Isle, Loyalty Islands, New Caledonia

After reading reviews I was excited for Mare unfortunately it did not live up to its expectations and it is the first time I have given a 1 star review. Compared to other stops on the same cruise it was pale in comparison. The crystal blue waters should be an amazing sight unfortunately with only the one excursion available it means it can be a busy spot - however definitely worth the trip for the beach. The locals have price gouging down to a tee - other islands you allow for an increase as it's a tour day and easy money but Mare was a downright disgrace. It was the only time the cruise expedition was cheaper than what was on offer at the shore. Prior to the beach we tried to head left at the port towards a beach that had stunning reviews for snorkelling only to be told that the road was prohibited to tourists. Shambles all around and as I said the first ever 1 star review I have given. Won't be aiming to return and if I do I sadly won't be making the effort to get off the boat.

Mystery Island, Vanuatu

Beautiful little island which used to be an American World War II runway. Locals were very friendly and had plenty of stalls providing tours and rentals and food. We took our own snorkel gear and reef shoes and walked to the far end of the run way - the same spot where tours took groups too on the boat. Currents in the water were very fast and strong so not recommended for those not confident in their swimming. Current took us from far end of the runway to about 150 meters from the dock in 20 minutes. We then went around to the far side of the island where the current was not as strong so everyone could swim. Fish were beautiful and a great experience just be careful with anyone who is not a strong swimmer.

Lifou Isle, New Caledonia

Fantastic little island. Locals run a small market and stalls scattered throughout. Coconuts and drinks for around $3 AUD or 200 Francs. Very warm but the waters are crystal clear and blue. Walk up to the church on the mountain was worth the views - it's quite steep so take your time. Jinek Bay is without a doubt some of the best snorkelling I have ever seen. $15 AUD payable at the Bay - only allowed 100 people at a time so get there early. Don't wear sunscreen as the coral is protected just cover up. Reef shoes and snorkel gear are a must and if you have a GoPro it's worth the videos and memories.

Noumea, New Caledonia

We booked an excursion through Gateway Shore Tours Noumea to Escapade Island. Alfred was fantastic and the island was like something from a movie. Fresh seafood buffet lunch included and the some of the best Snorkeling I have ever done.

Sydney, Australia

Sydney is beautiful. Fortunate to live here but there is plenty to see and do which caters to all ages. Highly recommend the bridge climb if you have a few days to spare.
