Review summary

This was our first cruise on Viking and it was a wonderful experience. It is the quality of the overall experience that really sets this cruise line apart.

Embarkation

5 out of 5
Everything went smoothly. Viking seems to think of every detail to make the experience easy.

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

5 out of 5
All of the dining rooms were excellent. We very much enjoyed a top quality meal in each of the specialty restaurants, but the food choices and quality in each of the other dining venues were also excellent. We don't drink alcoholic beverages, so we can't specifically comment on that aspect of the meal.

Onboard Activities

5 out of 5
Very nice pools and a really amazing Nordic spa area. Very nice fitness center but we didn't use it.

Entertainment

5 out of 5
High quality musical stage programs, excellent performances by musicians in different ship venues throughout the cruise, several guest lecturers who were chosen to enhance our understanding and experience before we visited each port, and two wonderful singers from the Mariinski Ballet Company. We were really impressed.

Children's Programs

Children are not allowed on Viking cruise ships

Service and Staff

5 out of 5
All of the interactions we had with the staff were excellent. Viking ships provide an amazing amount of personal attention with a 2 to 1 ratio of passengers to staff onboard.

Ship Quality

5 out of 5
Everything was well designed to provide excellent opportunities for rest and relaxation. Most areas on the ship are never crowded during the cruise. Although there had been an accident that ended a cruise several weeks before ours, we saw NO evidence that anything had ever been amiss on the ship.

Cabin / Stateroom

5 out of 5
We were very pleased with the layout and decor of cabin. The beds were large and comfortable, there was lots of storage and cabinet space, and the bathroom was very well designed with a great shower, heated floors, ant anti-fog mirror and lots of cabinet space. The TV was large, and had lots of choices of movies, lectures, information about the cruise, etc. The weather was cool during the trip, so we didn't spend much time on the veranda, but it was very nice.

Ship tip

These guys are really organized. Pay attention to the assigned times to meet for excursions and all will go smoothly.

Ports of call

Copenhagen, Denmark

5 out of 5
There is an included (no additional charge) excursion at each port, and we went on these excursions at each port. Copenhagen is a great venue, so we enjoyed being there a couple of days early and then using the port day as well. Lots to do in Copenhagen.

Ronne, Bornholm, Denmark

3 out of 5
Did the included excursion which was adequate to visit and learn about the island.

Visby, Sweden

3 out of 5
Did the included excursion which was adequate to visit and learn about Visby.

Tallinn, Estonia

4 out of 5
Did the included excursion which involved quite a bit of walking, but this is a very nice city to visit.

St. Petersburg, Russian Federation

5 out of 5
Did the included excursion and four additional excursions to the Hermitage Museum, a river cruise with walking visits to two magnificent churches, a program of native music and dance, and Catherine's Palace. All were great choices that we very much enjoyed. The quality of the excursions were excellent, and as always the buses and guides were very good. We were glad that we used the ship's excursions and did not try to get Visa's and make other arrangements.

Cruise Stockholm Archipelago

5 out of 5
Great scenery, but no port stop.

Stockholm, Sweden

5 out of 5
Stockholm is another great city to visit. We went on the included excursion and then visited parts of the city on foot. We stayed an extra day after disembarking. We expecially enjoyed visiting the Vasa Museum.

Disembarkation

5 out of 5
These guys are so good at planning everything so that it is a pleasant experience. We stayed an extra day to visit more of the city, and we chose a hotel by the Central Train Station so we could take the express train to the airport in the morning. Everything went as planned.
