Definitely worth the extensive time required to fly to China. The history, the scenery, the customs, the Viking experience provided many long lasting memories!
Embarkation
2 out of 5
The normal Viking embarkation dock was not available which forced them to use a sub-standard, dangerous set of uneven concrete steps without handrails to go from the street down to the Chinese Customs boat before we could board. There were no Viking personnel assisting with carry on bags or helping passengers that obviously had difficulty navigating the uneven terrain.
However, Viking personnel were on board the Customs Boat with very welcome cold water.
Ship experiences
Food and Dining
5 out of 5
Once onboard, the Viking atmosphere we expected took over after the horrible embarkation. After I told the Maitre D (Jay) that I was Gluten intolerant, he was always available to ensure I had not only the right food choices, but offered selections that were not on the menu when necessary.
Onboard Activities
3 out of 5
Other than the fitness center, there were no other onboard activities available but we knew this before we booked the cruise.
Entertainment
5 out of 5
AWESOME! The staff provided several nights of the most enjoyable Chinese related entertainment! Music and dances with traditional costumes from different ethnic groups and dynasties; a crew Cabaret show and traditional Chinese music various nights. Our cabin steward, Marvin, was the star of two of the shows which made it even more delightful! There were also several other noteworthy entertainment sources: the music by Armin and Josephine each night; the Three Gorges narrations by Elliot; China Today, Chinese Culture, Buddhism Lecture, and the various demonstrations offered a wide variety of opportunity to learn more about China and the Chinese people.
Service and Staff
5 out of 5
Could not ask for better service from every member of the Staff, but especially Etta, Jimmy, Jay and the Chef!
Ship Quality
4 out of 5
The design was satisfactory; the cleanliness was outstanding . However, there always seemed to be a hint of mold and/or mildew in the corridors.
Cabin / Stateroom
5 out of 5
Again, the age of the boat was visible in various areas such as on the veranda, the carpet, seams in the bathroom etc. However, it was more than adequate.
Ship tip
Choose your cabin wisely. Although all cabins have veranda's, some are located too close to the engine, the anchor, etc and the noise created sleeping issues for some guests. Our friend's opted for Cabin 202 and had almost zero balcony. Cabin #439 was just right in location, size, convenience to staircases etc.
Embarkation port: initial embarkation has already been discussed. However, as we sailed, the evening lightshows of all the buildings provided the most beautiful send off! Unfortunately I did not have my camera so the memories will have to suffice.
Our tour guide, Jason, was very efficient from start to finish. Our intraflight arrangements, our hotel check in, and always, always giving us the information we needed to be prepared for each journey.
