Review summary

Great trip! We're so glad we were able to experience Cuba before the ban on US cruise ship travel.

Embarkation

5 out of 5
We had no problems boarding Sirena.

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

5 out of 5
We thought the food was excellent in every venue.

Onboard Activities

4 out of 5
This is all dependent on what you enjoy and in what you expect. If you want things like a climbing wall, this is NOT your cruise line. If you want lower keyed fun, enrichment, and are itinerary focused, you will enjoy the small ships and thus the smaller (but very good) shows performed on the dance floor (no stage). My husband enjoyed the non-crowded fitness center and pool, we both enjoyed the spa, I enjoyed Bingo and the needlepoint gatherings.

Entertainment

4 out of 5
Small ship = small shows on the dance floor (no stage/theatre). All of the shows were good — except the magician. We have rarely enjoyed the magicians on any cruise line.

Service and Staff

5 out of 5
Service and staff were excellent. The Casino bartender knew what my husband drank after his first visit, and I enjoy being called by name by the staff. The staff is very friendly and helpful.

Ship Quality

5 out of 5
We loved the old world charm of the wood paneling and decor. This class of ship is currently being renovated to a somewhat more modern appearance. I hope they don’t ruin the rich, warm, comfortable, homey feel. Having said that, if you are a chrome and glass person, you may not like the old world ambiance of the pre-renovation ship. We will experience both the pre-renovation and the post-renovation on Nautica in 2020. We'll see the changes then.

Cabin / Stateroom

4 out of 5
Cabin 7033. Small, but we are only in the cabin to shower, change, and sleep. Most other cruise lines/ships have somewhat larger cabins and bathrooms, but this was adequate for us. We enjoyed Oceania so much, that we’ve booked two more Oceania cruises (on the same class ship) since this first experience.

Ship tip

Relax and enjoy yourself. Get to the shows early to get the best seats.

Ports of call

HAVANA, CUBA

5 out of 5
We are so glad we were able to experience the Cuban culture before the ban on US cruise ships. Very poor, but happy and proud people! They love their food and music! We thoroughly enjoyed the Tropicana!

CIENFUEGOS, CUBA

5 out of 5
We took an excursion to the Bay of Pigs. What a cultural eye opener. We even had lunch at a family’s “restaurant” in their home.

SANTIAGO DE CUBA, CUBA

5 out of 5
Beautiful countryside. Lovely people. We enjoyed the music and dance entertainment.

Punta Cana, Dominican Republic Did not visit port

Choppy seas prevented us tendering at Punta Cana. The substituted port was Samana, where the tour was interesting and the beach was beautiful.

Nassau, Bahamas

5 out of 5
We’ve experienced Nassau several times before, so we went on a dolphin encounter (which we enjoyed).

Disembarkation

5 out of 5
We had no problems with disembarkation or Customs. It was a smooth process.
