Review summary

I was very disappointed in the ship, the lecture variety, and the stops. Additionally, many passengers became ill, including my husband, who is himself a physician.  The cost of the seeing the doctor on board was excessive and we had no choice, obviously, but to pay it or leave the ship.  $1450 for a doctor visit and two packets of Tamaflu which sell for $110 each at CVS is exorbitant! Although we had received our flu shots my husband contracted the flu while on board.  A number of other passengers were ill also.  I think the trip cost enough without the cruise line needing to charge so much for care. When I questioned the cruise line in a letter I was told the cost was commensurate with other cruise lines...does that mean they fix the price?

Unlike providers elsewhere you pay the full price not the discounted price your insurance company negotiated for you. If you have out of country coverage, you should be able get some reimbursement from your insurance.

This is classic! A physician complaining about being over charged for medical care. For my son's 30 minute operation the physician alone charged over $60,000. Sorry to not be too sympathetic, I wish everyone's medical cost was were not excessive. Does the ship force you to see the doctor?

I'm a little surprised a doctor would not understand the costs associated with establishing a medical facility in a challenging environment compared to on land. The line has to seek personnel with a very broad and extensive background and pay them to practice on a ship where the number of billable hours is much lower compared to a land based practice. I went to a hospital recently and it was $30k for a 4 hour stay. $1450 sounds pretty great to seek help in the middle of the ocean. As far as the flu shot, even I know they can't prepare a shot that covers every possible strain of the flu.
