Review summary

Out of the 5 cruises I’ve done with Royal, Serenade is my favorite ship so far. Enjoyed everything it had to offer. Have respect for the staff on the ship, they work long hard hours and still do it with a smile.

Embarkation

5 out of 5
Fastest embarkation ever. Quick check in and walked right on the ship.

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

3 out of 5
We pretty much expected the new norm of Royals menu and food. There were good meals and some not so great but happy to get the opportunity to try something new. My favorite was the smoked potato soup in MDR. My disappointment was the truffle fries only because I couldn’t taste any truffle.

Onboard Activities

5 out of 5
There were plenty of things to do in regards to shows and other activities. Too cold for outdoor activities but that is expected in New England this time of year. Did use hot tub and pool in Solarium and the temperature was very comfortable.

Entertainment

4 out of 5
Took advantage of all shows on board which were nice. Always live music in the centrum. Relaxing atmosphere.

Service and Staff

5 out of 5
Room steward was great. Went out of his way for us when we needed a corkscrew bottle opener after we accidentally broke the first one given to us. 🤦‍♀️ Went to guest services with a broken corkscrew stuck in our bottle of wine. Told them I had a stupid a question woman behind counter said there are no stupid questions, she located someone who could fix our wine bottle debacle and laughed and joked about it. No complaints.

Ship Quality

5 out of 5
Beautiful design of ship. We knew the age of the ship when we booked the cruise so we weren’t expecting perfection. The ship was extremely clean and well maintained. I’m sure if you looked hard enough you would find a little scuff or ding somewhere but everything looked great.

Cabin / Stateroom

5 out of 5
Would definitely book this cabin again. It was in an area of the ship you would expect to be noisy but it was actually very quiet. A set of doors was at the entrance to our hallway which kept any loud noises out. Felt like our own private hideaway on the ship and it was located in a perfect spot on the ship. MDR was located not too far from our room but you would have never guessed it.

Ship tip

Keep in mind that it’s a smaller ship so you won’t find the large water slides or a Johnny Rockets or a Sorrentos pizza. It’s still a bright cheerful atmosphere.

Ports of call

Saint John, New Brunswick

3 out of 5
Not really much to see. You can see the reversing rapids but there is a tissue paper making facility on the other side of the river, kind of distracts from the natural scenery. That aside there is some interesting history in the area and the prices of seafood in the local restaurants are actually not that expensive.

Boston, Massachusetts

Disembarkation

5 out of 5
Fastest and most smooth disembarkation ever. No backed up passengers in hallways or on the stairs. Not stressful at all.
