Review summary

It’s a quiet, 5-day trip down the California coast and back. The ports — and the coast — are not the point. Enjoy the ship!

Embarkation

4 out of 5
Port of San Francisco is very smooth, and very quiet under Covid restrictions. Covid screening complicated things, because our test results hadn’t arrived yet, but Princess had a rapid antigen test on-site for a fee. Getting the extra test delayed our entry by about 45 minutes.

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

4 out of 5
Overall, the food was up to Princess’ usual high standards. Dinners were great, and snacks were marvelous! Since this is a smaller ship, there’s no Alfredo’s Pizzeria, which we missed, but the complement of snack sandwiches and chocolate things kept us well satisfied.

Horizon Court

4 out of 5

This is the iconic “Lido Deck” buffet, with all of the selections one would expect, including many of the lesser items in the dining rooms each night. Covid restrictions had reduced the amount of selections, but what they had were more than adequate. As usual for us, we appreciated having the salads, British and Indian selections, but missed the Asian items that we found on the more extensive Royal-class ships. Most items are served up by ship staff, but about a third of the items are grab-and-go things.

Slice Pizzeria

4 out of 5

The pizza slices here on the pool deck are the typical cheese and pepperoni offers, plus a decent daily special. The pizza is hand-tossed on-site, with a thin crust, that comes out very good. It’s no substitute for Alfredo’s Neapolitan pizza. But it’s a reasonable fill-in for a moment’s desire during an afternoon of sunning.

Wheelhouse Bar

5 out of 5

Our prime hangout for the trip! Main advantage was some fabulous entertainment presented there (an Irish duo, singing pop and folk songs), but also a very good selection of higher-end whiskies. The adjoining space, the Salty Dog Gastropub, was suitably creative with burgers, fries, calamari, and a good selection of beers. We found it oriented more toward the creative-fried-food side, which is not our preference, but the lobster mac-and-cheese was wonderful!

Sabatini's Italian Trattoria

4 out of 5

This is, hands down, the best food venue on board the Ruby Princess! Sabatini’s in general offers fabulous selections, from the breadsticks and seasoned olive oil on the front to the Beef Pappardelle. The Veal Marsala was a standout dish! However, be aware that some design elements of the ship makes this Sabatini’s deck shake. When the Ruby Princess is at speed, items on the tables rattle and occasionally move. More sensitive travelers should visit when the ship is docked in port.

The Salty Dog Grill

4 out of 5

Offering the pool-deck selections of burgers and hot dogs, I found the food an excellent place to satisfy hankerings for a good hot dog. They also offer an intriguing vegetarian taco, but we didn’t get to try that.

Good Spirits at Sea

5 out of 5

A very entertaining place, with an interesting selection of creative cocktails. The regular sessions with the bartenders explaining the drinks were highly entertaining. I particularly recommend the drink with pea flower tea in it, which changes color as it’s mixed!

Adagio

4 out of 5

This is a good, quiet place to hang out if you wish to escape the bustle of the rest of the ship. Nestled alongside Sabatini’s on Deck 16, it’s a good place to wait until your reservation is up.While I can’t vouch for all hours of the day, the lounge appeared to be shut down due to the low passenger count… and that was fine with us! We ordered drinks using the Medallion Class app, and relaxed in peace.

International Café

5 out of 5

Always the go-to place for a quick bite, any time of day or night. The small Cornish pasties are a favorite of ours, as is the availability of the day’s soups. Beware the ever-present cookies, but do indulge in the regular chocolate mousse and cake offerings.

Entertainment

5 out of 5
A good selection of entertainment, from the stage shows to the game shows to the info programs. The size and grandeur of the programming was a bit muted, given the Covid restrictions, but there didn’t seem to be any fewer activities to keep everyone busy.

Princess Theater

5 out of 5

A great selection of shows here, with a great space capable of holding a large portion of the ship’s passengers at once! Musical shows were up to Princess standards, if still a bit traditional to the cruise ship experience. The solo shows and enrichment was quite muted during our trip, partly because it was a short trip, but also the relative dearth of available content right now.The staff won’t serve Medallion App drinks here… at least, not yet. I’m hoping they do once full cruise service starts.

Movies Under The Stars

4 out of 5

The Big Screen has a good selection of movies, video concerts, and live sports over the length of the cruise. I’m very impressed by the fact that there are some “balcony” decks specifically meant for movie watching! The volume can be a bit loud, but none of it is hearable from the adjoining Neptune Pool area — a great example of acoustic isolation! The movies are good quality across the genres, and the marquee movies are typically shown twice in the day, so all can catch them. (They’re all repeated on the cabin TVs if you still miss them.)Live events, though, are highly dependent on the satellite reception of your ship. the US football games they showed had video hiccups and delays about every 10 seconds, making for a very stuttered game that missed a lot of crucial plays. Hopefully the reception and video quality on your trip will be better.

Ship Quality

5 out of 5
The layout of these Grand-class ships offers a well-thought set of places for everyone. Shifting the Skywalkers Club off the stern and next to the stacks is still the best modification Princess has done to their existing ships…. and I love the full-wraparound promenade deck they offer, even if the bow is not open while sailing. I think I like the Ruby as the best of the class. We never saw a problem with cleanliness or organization. Tables in common areas and in the Lido buffet were diligently cleaned, and the staff made good use of signs to indicate tables that were in need of disinfecting.

Cabin / Stateroom

5 out of 5
A great mini-suite space, with a full sofa (with pull-out bed) and a built-in desk. The recent ship refurb (2021) removed the old flat TVs in favor of larger 40” wall-mounted TVs, leaving the center kiosk completely open! More table and shelf space than we’ve ever seen in a standard cabin! The bathroom takes good advantage of the extra mini-suite space to include a full shower tub, but there’s still only the single sink and single electrical outlet. The outside balcony is a bit larger than a typical Balcony Cabin, but not as large as a Deluxe Balcony Cabin offers. That’s fine; there’s enough space for two to easily lounge out there, and you’re paying more in this case for the better room! One thing to watch out for — The Medallion App works great on the balcony, and room service or bar service will bring stuff directly to your room. (You’ll still have to answer the door, sorry!) But the Medallion app will frequently latch onto a different balcony’s beacon, and show you on a different deck than you really are. Make sure the app shows your proper location before ordering!

Ship tip

If you’re looking for a quiet place to relax, consider the lounges and bars when activities are NOT running. Ordering things via the Medallion Class app means they’ll still find you, wherever you are.

Ports of call

San Francisco, California

5 out of 5
For locals like us, this is really just the space to get on and off. If you’re stopping here for a mid-trip port day, it’s a medium walking distance to Pier 39 and a strong walk to Fisherman’s Wharf. Pier 39 is a typical tourist trap, but the Fisherman’s Wharf (pier 45) has some of the best seafood restaurants in the city! Get a meal of cioppino, or just a very good cup of chowder. Ghirardelli’s Chocolate is nearby, too, and worth a tour. Spaces farther out can include the Embarcadero Center and Ferry Building (pier 1), or Golden Gate Park. Take the F tram line to get up and down the shoreline, if walking seems a bit too far for you.

Ensenada, Mexico

3 out of 5
It’s a good, small port for meeting the Foreign Port Requirement, but so many of Princess’ cruises stop here that we’ve visited multiple times. We stayed on the ship. Local shops offer the usual collection of souvenirs and cruise-industry jewelry. More authentic hand-crafted stuff can be found in the stalls at La Bufadora, if you take the bus excursion there. It’s a gauntlet to get through the stalls to the actual blowhole, but those stalls may be the better attraction in their own right.

San Diego, California

4 out of 5
The port and pier are a good space to head off on organized tours, but there’s little in the immediate area to spend your time. San Diego is working on that, and it may be a different story by 2023. One notable exception — the next pier over is the USS Midway naval museum! This is the real aircraft carrier from the 1950s through the 1990s, outfitted as a permanent museum with military displays and an excellent collection of Naval aircraft! Touring this gives a great notion of what life was like in the US Navy. Princess does not offer excursion tickets, but Viator and Cruiseline (here!) do. Don’t bother with them. Unless it’s a packed and busy summer day, you can buy tickets on the spot for the same cost.

Disembarkation

5 out of 5
Disembarkation was a breeze! We tend to be later off the ship than most, so we closed out our cabin and grabbed a bite to eat in the Piazza while waiting for our group to be called. When it was clear there weren’t that many people left to disembark, they dissolved the groups and had us depart at will! We barely slowed down through our final badging, walk down the gang ramp, and inspection by Customs. Total time from standing up to on the street was just over five minutes!

Traveler Photos

The "suite" area, showing the second TV, couch, and center kiosk. The full bathroom, taken from the door. The closet space. Plenty of room, plus a safe on the shelves. The full cabin, from the front door. Note the TV is on the wall instead of the center kiosk. The Wheelhouse stage, with performing artists Aileen & Sticks. The Ruby Princess, berthed at Pier 27. In most cases, this is where the cruise ships will stop.

They close the promenade at the bow when at sea now? Rats! I loved to hang there and watch the flying fish (on the way to Hawaii).
