Review summary

The Regal Princess is a beautiful ship. We never felt like we were in a crowd. The Piazza is a wonderful place to sit in the evening and listen to music. We prefer to eat dinner early, so we showed up for Anytime Dining when the Symphony dining room opened at 5:00 and never had to wait more than a couple of minutes. Be sure to arrive at least 30 minutes early at the theater to find seats. People were walking around 15 minutes before the show, trying to find 2 seats together. We also enjoyed the Princess Live trivia games.

The mini suite was very spacious and comfortable. Although we're used to a King size bed, we slept very comfortably. Since we had cold weather on our Canada/New England cruise, it was so nice to have a bathtub for a hot soak at the end of the day (we rarely saw anyone in the jacuzzis and never anyone in the pools - too cold). We brought magnetic hooks and an extra clothes line but didn't need them, but do bring clothes pins to do laundry in the sink and hang on the line in the bathtub. The body wash in the shower worked great for our laundry, and it dried quickly. Be sure and ask for bathrobes if you want them.

Ship tip

To avoid sea sickness, we used ginger pills and sea bands and didn't have any problems at all. We brought a small power strip (be sure it's without a surge protector) and used it to charge our electronics each night. We went to the specialty restaurant the first evening and made our reservation for later in the week.

We arrived a day early so we could spend a full day in New York. Our hotel was in the financial district. We walked the Brooklyn Bridge (highly advisable) and took the subway to see the sights in Upper Manhattan.

Newport, Rhode Island

We prefer to venture out on our own, so we took a Lyft to the Cliff Walk starting on Memorial St. We walked to the Breakers and stopped there for a tour. If you buy your ticket at the Breakers, you can show it at some of the other mansions for a discounted entrance price of $5 (see Newport's websites for which mansions this applies to). We then continued down the Cliff Walk - beautiful, beautiful shoreline! Just make sure you know how far you want to walk, because once you get to a certain point you have to either turn around or go all the way to Ledge Rd. via an unpaved, rocky path. The Cliff Walk was the highlight of the cruise for me! Afterward we caught the city bus that runs along Bellevue Ave. and got off at the Marble House for the tour, then took the bus back to the ship.

We prefer to venture out on our own, so we took a Lyft to the Boston Common and followed the Freedom Trail all the way to the Old North Church. Stopped at the Faneuil Market for a nice bowl of clam chowder.

Bar Harbor, Maine Did not visit port

Saint John, New Brunswick

We stayed in town and explored on our own. We enjoyed the tour of the Loyalist House and walking through Kings Square. Had a nice lunch at Billy's Seafood Company in the City Market.

Halifax, Nova Scotia

We prefer to venture out on our own, so we took a taxi to the Citadel and walked downhill from there to the waterfront, then walked back to our ship. Great Titanic exhibit in the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic. Wonderful lunch at Sea Smoke on the waterfront. It was a very cold day in Halifax (high of 41 F); it hailed while we were in the restaurant and even snowed for about 15 minutes later in the afternoon!
