Regal Princess Retired

15 Night Hawaii (Los Angeles Roundtrip)

Sail date: June 17, 2007

Ship: Regal Princess Retired

Cabin type: Inside

Traveled as: Family (older children)

Reviewed: 17 years ago

Review summary

One of the last cruises for the Regal Princess, selling to an Australlian Line. Missed "open dining" concept on bigger ships, especially on late tour days in Hawaii. We brought all warm weather wear, only to shiver each way on the Pacific, was in the 50's at night. Will look for longer island stays in future, as tours took the full time of all but one of our stops in Honolulu. Princess is geared more toward a senior crowd than other lines we have cruised, but a younger- more energetic entertainment staff helped here for the 15 days, as opposed to our Crown Princess 10 day Panama Canal cruise. Can't beat the overall value- wouldn't have more than a week in a moderate Hawaii hotel without meals for the same price for our family of four, which we split into two cabins.

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

5 out of 5
Princess offers world-class dining.

Entertainment

3 out of 5
Small ship=less choice. My 18 yr. old son fell between teen program (17 yr. max.) and young party crowd.

Children's Programs

5 out of 5
Saw my 16 yr. old daughter sporadically between her busy social schedule- appreciated "youth patrols" policing all areas, leaving personal time for us to enjoy shows and activities.

Service and Staff

5 out of 5
Excellent entertainment staff, food staff were very professional.

Ship Quality

3 out of 5
Ready for refurb.

Cabin / Stateroom

5 out of 5
One of the biggest cabins with most comfortable queen bed- way better than the hotel in LA.

Ports of call

Kailua-Kona, Hawaii

5 out of 5
Took the Helicopter Tour from here over entire island with a short refuel stop in Hilo. Our pilot-narrated DVD of the tour is great.
Don't Miss: Need a few days to really see this big area.

Nawiliwili, Kauai

5 out of 5
Stunning views from NaPali Explorer inflatable. Bumpy ride compared to catamarans and larger boats- but real fun and wet if you are adventurous.
Don't Miss: Sea caves along coast.

Hilo, Hawaii

5 out of 5
Wished for more time, ATV tour of cattle ranch and cliffs was great, but saw Hilo and area only through bus window each way.
Don't Miss: Valley of the Kings

Honolulu, Oahu

1 out of 5
Arizona Tour ate most of day, after two-hour wait to get ticket, had to come back two and a half hours later to get in line again for 45 mins. Never made to see beach :{

Ensenada, Mexico

3 out of 5
Only had two hours, but covered most of tourist friendly area by foot. May develop into a Cozumel-like place one day, but still has a way to go- traffic lights would be a good start.
Don't Miss: If you are adventurous, you can drive a four-wheeler on the city streets, braving the traffic.

Lahaina, Maui

5 out of 5
Maui has it all- we snorkeled at the crater and swam with green sea turtles, will definetly return here for more days.
Don't Miss: If you like any tropical activity, you'll probably find the most choices here.

Pros: Hawaii

Cons: Cold weather on Pacific
