Review summary

Overall 16 fabulous days onboard the Prisendam. This is the fierst time we have spent BOTH Christmas AND New Years at sea. It was 100% worth it!

Embarkation

5 out of 5
Waited indoors for boarding. Comfortable seats. Warm apple cider and cold water offered. Cookies also. We were onboard 1-hour before normal embarkation time.

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

Raised in New York City. Worked in Manhattan. Have eaten in the finest restaurants. The food rivals any great meal I've ever had. ... EXCELLENT! ... Quality. preparation, presentation, PERFECT!

Onboard Activities

2 out of 5
Not HAL's fault. Activities are built around the demographics of the passengers, ... somewhere's between comatose and drooling.

Entertainment

2 out of 5
So, so bad! ... A pot-bellied magician. Felt so bad for him that his career has led him to doing lame and antiquated tricks. ... An "Internationally reknowed" saxophonist (never heard of her). Very talented, and young ships-dancers that seemed soooooooooo out-of-place. They belong on Carnival. ... And it goes on, and on. Again, catwering to the demographics.

Service and Staff

5 out of 5
SHUT THE FRONT DOOR!!!!!! ... Beyond professional. Beyond competent. Beyond friendly. Our cabin was Vista Suite 107 on the upper promenade deck. Our 2 cabin stewards were perfect. We ate late seating in the main dining room, table number 107 (yes, same as suite). The Asst Rest. Manager DANNY was outstanding! as were our 2 waiters, HONDO, and "KUNTI" (Naomi). The WIne Steward THERESA was heaven! ... We also ate at the Specialty Restaurants (all more than once), and the same 5-STARS applies to all the satff.

Ship Quality

5 out of 5
ELegant "Old World" small ship charm. ... Real TEAK DECKS! ... But in all candor, it is time to retire this majestic lady. THIRTY-YEARS of service is way more than enough. ... Every inch SPOTLESS! ... Thank you Officers and Staff. WELL DONE!

Cabin / Stateroom

3-stars due to the age of the cabin. I would stuff a towel in the balcony slider door to keep the wind noise down. Room amenities, great! Room cleanliness, OUTSTANDING! Cabin location, perfect.

Ship tip

Do not expect to be "entertained". This ship lacks trhe entertainment quality of many others. Once again, I say, consider the demographics of the passengers. This was by far the oldest group of folks we have of any cruise we have sailed. (30+ cruises).

Ports of call

Ft. Lauderdale (Port Everglades), Florida

5 out of 5
Great port. Great on-site parking. Easy to get to.

Half Moon Cay, Bahamas (Private Island)

Typical cay. Surprised at HAL. Other much less expensive cruise lines have much nicer private cays.

Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic

Its hard for me to rate this POC higher. Not because of the port but because I have been there sooooo many times that I have lost count. Side note: The Prinsendam is docked for approx. 15-hours here. PLAN AN EXCURSION. Seeing the "Zona Colonial" will only take you 2 or 3 hours. ... Then what?

Catalina Island (Isla Catalina), Dominican Republic

3 out of 5
Loke Half Moon Cay, no great shakes.

Ponce, Puerto Rico

Very quaint, historic town. Fun to explore.

Bridgetown, Barbados

Downtown is no big deal. VERY expensive shopping. Plan an excursion.

Scarborough, Tobago

The "nicest" beach is just okay. All beaches are free to the public BUT you pay an entrance fee to go into the park where the "nicest" beach is located. We rode 20 minutes by taxi to go to this beach. Don't bother. Go to whichever beach is closest to your ship. ... Interesting tourist shops at the terminal. Don't expect to find bargains

Port Elizabeth, Bequia, Grenadines

Loved this quaint, small town. Primarity because of Princess Margaret beach. BEAUTIFUL! ... And you much lunch at JACKS on this beach.

Fort-De-France, Martinique

3 out of 5
Large, noisy, crowded. HUNDREDS of shops. You decide if they're worth shopping in.

Deshaies, Guadeloupe

3 out of 5
Smaller version of Martinique. Enjoyed it more simply because not as congested.

Charlotte Amalie, St. Thomas

3 out of 5
Am I the only one sick of St. Thomas? ... Find an excursion and get out of town. The shops located right at the cruise port are very nice.

Disembarkation

HAL does an EXCELLENT job of this. Thank you Holland America
