Review summary

We booked a Hawaiian cruise with Norwegian for our 40th anniversary. Two weeks before the cruise they cut a day off the cruise making our 7 day cruise a 6 day cruise. The ‘gesture of gratitude’ was to reduce the cost by 1 day. So the gratitude for reducing my cruise by a day was to refund me 1 day. Really? To make matters worse, we get a letter in the cabin telling us that my first excursion of Road to Hanna in Maui is cut short due to a landslide. We decided to still do the excursion because the person at the excursion desk convinced us that we were not missing anything really because not much is past the town of Hana. We get on the tour bus and find out that there is no landslide. The tour was cut short at the request of NCL because they got to port later than expected. Also found out that we missed the seven sacred pools and the wine tasting. Yet we paid full price for the tour. Not cool. I also have to say that the ‘Pride of America’ is in serious need of some pride. My wife and I have cruise over 20 times in the past 40 years. Mostly on Carnival and Royal. First time on Norwegian and likely our last. Dining area windows were so dirty that my camera couldn’t focus on the dolphins we noticed swimming by. Lots of rust areas on the ship including on our balcony. We were watching a show in the theater while it was raining outside and water was dripping from the ceiling. Overall the ship is old and dated. Staff was nothing like any of the other cruises we have been on. They just didn’t seem happy. Few smiled or even said Hi. Never saw our steward until the last day. We made the best of it for our 40th anniversary but I wish I could go back in time and do something different.

Thanks for the reviews...I'm hoping we have the positive experience rather than the depressing experience... I'll let you know as soon as we can

We also did the cruise which was shortened by one day departing March 11th, 2018. Not the fault of NCL. Since it is an American ship, the Coast Guard periodically do a full audit, or check, of the ship, at short notice. The ship has to comply. NCL put us up for that night in the Hilton Hawaiian Village, plus transported us all to the ship the next day, as well as the refund. I feel that was good compensation. We loved the cruise and found the crew very friendly. Our cabin steward left us towel animals every day and we often saw him. We have done Princess cruises before, but this cruise was perfect for Hawaii. The food was great, and the shows were fantastic! Our cabin was clean and comfortable. We had a ball and would recommend this as the perfect way to see Hawaii!

We are on Pride of America now. Love the crew! Our suite could not be better. Clean and comfortable. The Road to Hana tour was not my favorite. There is not much to see in Hana, nor after. The scenery TO Hana was amazing. When we booked our tour to Hana the website said they no longer stop at the winery. Every where we've visited on the ship has been clean and dry. I'd cruise again on this ship and recommend it.

The Pride isan Amrican flagged ship with an American crew. I would not judge NCL by the only zAmerian flagged ship in the fleet.

We had same experiences on NCL. We had dirt or sand in our bed. Never saw the cabin steward. I’ve been on 25 cruises and this was the worst. I’m not hard to please, but when the cabin steward hands me my new sheets and never made up the bed I lost it. The food was garbage and the fruit smelled like it. It was like a cruise I’ve never been on. I will never cruise NCL again.

Sorry. And thank you for sharing. Hope our cruise (next month) will be a good one.

So sorry you both didn't have good experiences. We've done this itinerary twice in the past two years and have had nothing but an amazing time. We never had a bad experience and I'll continue to recommend this itinerary to those wanting to see the Hawaiian islands.

Sorry you had a negative experience with NCL. We encountered a less than satisfactory cruise with them on the same one 12 years ago. It was our honeymoon and my husband's first cruise. It turned him off so much he refused to go on another cruise for 10 years now he loves it because we decided to go on RCL. Since it was not my first cruise I knew what should be expected and this cruise was less than satisfactory. It all started with us booking and then switching the itinerary on us and didn't tell us. Meaning, we were scheduled to leave Maui as that's the island we were married in and instead left Oahu AND moved our sailing back a week. They told me this is what I booked initially and told them they were full of it because I would not wait an entire week to leave for a honeymoon. I told them it was also going to cost us more $$ to fly from Maui to Oahu and wanted to be compensated. Their way of compensating was to finally agree to round trip transfers to/from port/airport BUT in order to get the same cabin I had to pay more. Well whatever at that point it was our honeymoon and had to do whatever was necessary. At the time of embarking, my wallet was lifted thru security and I definitely know this for a fact. I remember specifically when I had it and when I didn't. Sad thing was when I got off the boat to check, no one on security spoke English...hmm. They never mentioned I needed to file a police report. Then the bank confirmed it was lifted when I put a hold on all my cards and then found out it had already been used on the complete opposite side of the island for over $100 in gas. While it was only $100 it was still done. I won't even go into the service on the ship and the rockiest channels we went thru and half the ship was sick, literally. The captain then announcing the next morning he apologized and that's usually a bad channel to sail thru. Probably would have been nice to know before hand?! Here's the kicker, after I wrote NCL to let them know we were less than satisfied with their sailing, they sent us a letter with a $500 voucher and apologized for the service. Well, not that we would sail again with them, but it would have been nice for them to enclose the voucher!! So I feel your pain and I'm glad you have experienced other ships to know this not the way a cruise is supposed to run. Now that my husband has a taste of a real cruise we are going on our 3rd in a couple of months! Heading to Alaska! Happy 40th Anniversary!
