I was very disappointed. I cruised twice on the American Hawaii Cruise Lines, and one other time on Norweigian. This cruise took place over Memorial Day, and being on an American ship, we figured they would really do special things for Memorial Day. Wrong.....They did absolutely nothing special. How unpatriotic can people be???? Staff was okay but not great. There are advantages that we have now realized when cruise lines use personnel from all over the world. They work hard for their money and nothing is too much trouble. Americans are used to doing bare minimum and it shows.
Ship experiences
Food and Dining

The food was good. It was nothing exceptional. We are used to ships that have Midnight Buffets, which this one did not. That was quite disappointing. Being able to eat where and when I want was extremely nice. That's the best thing about Norwegian ships. If you went to the buffet and got pasta, the food was never made hot enough on any occasions to stay that way until you sat down. If you were lucky, it was still lukewarm, but that's about all. I don't like lukewarm food. I like hot food.
Entertainment

It was okay but nothing to get excited about. We had 2 comedians and the show Shout.
Service and Staff

Superficially, they were friendly, not overly so, however. Our stateroom young man was never around. On the first night, we only had 2 hand towels and one roll of toilet paper that ran out in the middle of that night. What fun we had.
Ship Quality

The ship, being the Pride of America, could have been decorated so much more, especially in the hallways of each floor, like the stairwells, for each state. If you are a handicapped person, you definitely would have some problems. Some of the thresholds are too high and a wheelchair would not go over it. Some of the doors to the outer deck were extremely heavy and could not be opened by a handicapped person. After boarding the ship, we went to our room on the 10th floor, only to find we could not get into our room. We had a lot of company in that regard. Approximately 25-30 rooms of people could not get in. When the room cards were keyed upon checkin, they did not allow you into your room. WE were all sitting on the floor, while one member in our party went down to Guest Relations to have the card rekeyed. This was quite annoying. After a little while, a housekeeping supervisor came by and let all of us sitting on the floor into our rooms to wait for our family membe

Toilets flushing were a major problem our week. We had times it would not flush at all. Then all of a sudden out of nowhere it would flush. Our daughter's room on the 4th floor had to call service 3-4 times about the toilet not flushing. From speaking to other cruisers, they were having problems as well. We never did find out what was the problem.
Book the trip See Kileua 2 Ways on the ship excursion list. It is a great tour and quite enjoyable. You must be agile and have good balance. You climb through a lava tube and must bend over at waist level and climb over some uneven rocks for a short time and other uneven rocks. Great tour though!!
Book a tour on the Fairwind II catamaran for their morning snorkel trip. It includes lunch and 2 1/2 hours for snorkeling. It is a great tour. It is not offered on ship. Take a taxi from the port. It's not far at all and well worth it.
