We sailed with Ovation over New Years 2017/18 to New Zealand. Had a great time but there are A LOT of passengers onboard (so keep that in mind when doing anything; shows, restaurants, tendering, shore excursions, etc.), things can take some time (i.e. queues) and we found that a loud minority of guests tended to be inconsiderate and very rude, but if you can filter that out then youāll be fine. The staff onboard are incredible and go out of their way to provide the best service. The ship is well maintained and very clean. Remember to wash your hands, something that will be drilled into your mind onboard! ;)
Make sure everything is booked in advance (shows and restaurants) and where bookings arenāt available, show up early to get a good seat. In Royal Theatre, sit on the lower deck in the middle (there are poles all around and itās the best spot to have an unobstructed view), in 270 best spot is probably on either side up top or lower level. Make sure you book North Star and any onboard activities well in advance as they filled up pretty quickly.
Wonderland and Chops Grille are must do (both are incredible). Other restaurants are OK but not amazing. Definitely see the shows (Pixels, Legs, etc.) as something to see/do, theyāre entertaining but not spectacular. My favourite show was a Motown/Soul show, it had a good vibe.
Thereās always lots to do and heaps of places to eat and drink. The breakfast joints got really busy in the morning, so we ended up ordering breakfast the night before to be delivered the next morning, you can choose a time and what youād like, it was always on time and much easier to eat in the room.
Our stateroom was on level 13, just under the pool deck which meant that you could hear people walking/running on the level above at all hours, so would recommend some of the lower levels, youād also be closer to the Esplanade and theatres. Iād recommend taking disinfectant spray, shower products, and other toiletries as thereās not much available onboard. Youāre also not provided with coffee in the room, so need to take some or go to the cafes. The room itself (a superior stake room) was very spacious, had lots of storage, and was really comfortable but wasnāt exactly sound proof. Having a balcony was great (it needed to be towelled down as it got pretty wet outside sometimes).
There were two formal nights (suit and tie), the rest were casual. Most of the restaurants are smart casual.
Overall, an amazing ship and wonderful destinations but patience is a highly necessary virtue aboard the Ovation.
