I became a cruise addict with Royal Caribbean Oasis of the Seas
by drd611
Royal Caribbean exceeded my expectations. I have always been hesitant to go on cruises because I like to explore, adventure and engage in the cultural aspects of the ports. With such little time at each location, I wondered if I’d be satisfied. The ship itself is something to behold. There was so much to see and do on the ship itself, the locations were in a lot of ways secondary to being on the ship and enjoying all that it has to excite and offer. My review is just as much for the ship, the magnificent, Oasis of the Seas, as it is for Royal Caribbean itself. This ship was built in 2009, but updated in 2020. For sailing all year round, this ship was kept in great shape.
Tip: my review is arranged in categories. Not interested in certain sections? Feel free to skip to what you are interested in.
The activities:
From rock climbing to ice skating to bingo, trivia, live music there is something for everyone. My boyfriend and I were active the whole time and we didn’t get to do half of the activities. We really enjoyed the live music in central park, especially. Our nightly routine was to eat dinner and then go and hang out and listen to very musically skilled bands and musicians while drinking espresso. Lovely environment and the musicians were very talented, passionate, friendly, and entertaining.
The Solarium/Adults only section:
Beautiful modern space, adults only area for lounging, getting drinks at the bar with hot tubs, a pool and a handful of pool beds. We spent a lot of time here to be away from the area populated by families and kids. This area is beautiful with a lot of light coming in with all windows. It is partially covered with an area open outside. This area was nice to hang out and view the ports as we left them. We hung out and watched us leaving Jamaica and it was very beautiful.
The Stateroom:
The room was nice and the room attendant was great! Every day we came back to a neat and clean room with replenishments of whatever we requested. More towels, more pillows? No problem. Our room attendant was extremely friendly and was very good at his job. The space was a decent size with lots of little compartments to store personal items. The bed was pretty comfortable, which I was hoping that would be the case on a 7-night cruise! We really enjoyed having a balcony overlooking the ocean. The one thing that would have improved this experience would be to have lounge chairs or at least one lounge chair instead of just the 2 chairs with table. Especially having the larger balcony, we thought we would get to enjoy lounging. I did take a yoga mat and it was great to lay on the balcony. Lounge chairs would have improved the experience, but it was not make or break. The one other thing with the room that I’d like to have had a different experience was the water as very hot in the shower and that never changed. Maybe I could have alerted maintenance but kept thinking that was just how it was, or it would change based off time of day taking a shower, but it did not.
The Shows:
Aqua 80 was an energetic, an awe-inspiring show. The divers were extremely talented. They were also dancers and a couple of them, tight rope walkers. A beautiful blend of athleticism paired with dance and a perfectly themed show sailing on the ship. The diver’s dove from various heights on the ship into a small pool where they performed dances and other energetic acts. Tip: if you do not want to get wet, do not sit in the first 3-4 rows of seats!
We did not care for the other show that was in the inside theater (cannot remember the name) as it felt a bit cheesy and with random contrived acts put together. For some people, they may like it, but this was not our cup of tea.
The Frozen show was fantastic! Ice skating professionals who seemed to me to be pretty much Olympic level athletes. A range of performances on ice with fabulous and curious costumes with music and dance. We almost missed this show, thinking it was geared toward kids and we are so glad that we caught this beautiful performance which was for all audiences.
The Food and Service:
Wow. Overly pleased with the quality and consistency of food. The complimentary dining options were superb as well as the upgraded dining that we enjoyed as well. Windjammer has the best breakfast buffet. Just everything you can think of for breakfast, you got it there! Just a tip that I learned for next time, they offer a lunch buffet as well however it is only open until 3PM. We often ate breakfast around 10-11AM and were not hungry for lunch until around 3-4. So alas, I missed the lunch buffets when we were on the ship. But, I believe the complimentary Mexican restaurant was open during those hours. I had that once and I thought it was okay. I liked the fact that you can make your own tacos, burritos, etc. It didn’t matter much, because a couple of nights we decided to have two dinners or dinner and a late-night snack (pizza). It was so fun. You can sample a little bit here and a little bit there.
The main dining room was incredibly choreographed to perfection. Everything came out so quickly and perfectly. I was so pleased by the fresh food and variety of options. If you don’t like something or want to try something else? No problem, they will bring you out whatever is on the menu. Our servers. Borna and Rollie were so accommodating and kind. The head server, Pradeep, went above and beyond to make sure all of our restaurant accommodations were to our liking. We really are missing that crew! They are so good at being in the hospitality business. Each night there was a theme such as Caribbean, Italian, Mexican and others. There was something always for everyone. I appreciated the vegetarian options as well as I do like to eat plant based as a portion of my diet. I really enjoyed the Solarium bistro as well offering a variety of mediterranean dishes. Everything was tasty and fresh. The pizza was so good! Located on the main deck 5 and open late.
The upgraded dining we experienced was at 150 Central Park, Izumi and the Sip Tour Brunch. The 150 Central Park was delectable! Lobster thermidor. Wow. Lamb wrapped in a pastry dough with spinach. Wow. Izumi offered hibachi and sushi and we focused on the sushi and it was really good. I didn’t know what to expect on a ship for that type of cuisine, but they did deliver! The only food experience we were a little dissatisfied with was the Sip Tour Brunch. The tour was interesting, but we’d prefer it would have been when more of the chefs were preparing food. It included mimosas and brunch, but I enjoyed the complimentary brunch and buffets more. It just felt kind of basic, when I thought it was going to be more specialized since we paid separately for this experience.
Miscellaneous:
We could not hear the captain’s announcements well from the room. It was very muffled or muted. When we were out on the deck in the solarium, we were able to hear much better.
I believe the elevators could be improved ever so slightly. Not sure how. Sometimes very crowded. I heard someone speak of destination buttons so each elevator is going to a respective destination. I think this would be a great idea. Of course, sometimes we just took the stairs when it was only a couple of decks above or below or when it was too busy at the elevators for our liking.
Loved the hot tubs. You can find me in one every day of the cruise. If there is way to control the temperate a little better that would be great. There were 2 instances where it was not hot enough. Also, if there were a couple of more Jacuzzis that would be great since they often were crowded.
