Review summary

Overall a 7/10, a good vacation but should have been a lot better. Lots of little things that went wrong, like watered down drinks, inconvenient and inconsistent hours for activities and restaurants, unappetizing food in the MDR, and disappointing excursions. I think it was the result of an understaffed and overbooked ship. Service was great and we could tell they were trying their best. Royal needs to know their limits and plan accordingly.

Embarkation

A little stressful. Language barriers made it more difficult than it had to be.

Food and Dining

3 out of 5
Specialty restaurants were great, namely Chops, 150 Central Park, Izumi Hibachi and Chef's Table. MDR was disappointing the one night we went (lobster night). The lobster was mushy and my molten lava cake was cold and solid in the middle. The service was great though. Windjammer was okay for breakfast, very much cafeteria quality with some highlights like the hash browns. Sorrento's ended up feeding us the most as it was the only restaurant open at convenient times.

Service was great but the food was not. Glad we only came here on lobster night, although the lobster was pretty bad too, mushy and tasteless. My molten lava cake was cold and solid in the middle, and when I brought it up to the head waiter, he insisted that that was how it was supposed to be. Very odd.

Playmakers℠ Sports Bar & Arcade

Amazing service, if you see Reinan, give him a shout and a big tip! He remembered our names and called out to us every time he saw us. Also order the sushi nachos, I'm not a big sushi fan but it was absolutely delicious.

Chop's Grille

5 out of 5

The most delicious branzino I've ever had! Crispy skin, tender flakey meat. Incredibly flavorful, they didn't skimp on the seasoning! My husband had the lamb chops and really enjoyed it.

150 Central Park

5 out of 5

Very classy, the waiters are very personable. Food was great, although I have had better on land for a comparable cost. My friends with the unlimited dining package ended up eating here 3 times over our 7 day cruise and loved it every time.

Park Cafe

4 out of 5

Decent lattes if you have the drink package and don't want to spend money at Starbucks. The roast beef sandwiches that everybody raves about were, in a word... Disappointing. Thick chunks of cold fatty beef that didn't really resemble roast beef at all.

Windjammer Marketplace

The food was decent. Lots of options. Kinda wish it was better though.

Bionic Bar®by Mark Shakr

It's a cool gimmick the first time. But the options are bare bones, at best you can mix together a few different types of alcohol and a splash of coke. No syrups or garnishes other than a tiny lime wedge. Towards the end of our cruise, when the bars were watering down drinks, this place was packed because you don't have to worry about robot arms skimping on the alcohol.

Sorrento's Pizza

5 out of 5

Considering it's open 24 hours, the pizza was surprisingly good. They're even willing to make you a custom pizza for free. The cold bar options were hit or miss, but mostly good. The bar consistently made strong drinks!

Globe and Atlas Pub

Lovely atmosphere, friendly bartenders. Met a lot of interesting people here.

Izumi Hibachi & Sushi

5 out of 5

We did the hibachi. We go to a lot of hibachi places on land and this was one of the tastiest experiences. The chef made an "anaconda" with the rolled up egg omelet, that was really cute. The special cocktails were good too. And delicious mochi ice cream for dessert!

Onboard Activities

3 out of 5
Really inconvenient hours. Open from 11a-1:30pm, then 4:30pm-6pm. Kind of hard to plan around lunch and dinner.

Flowrider

2 out of 5

Felt like a pay to play type activity. One side only allows you to surf on your knees and you need to do it a few times (aka wait in line over and over for hours) to be able to try the other side that lets you stand up. However you only get ONE try to stand up to get the unlimited bracelet, no practicing (unless you count your one try?) and if you can't do it, you have to pay $65 for a training course to have unlimited access. So if you already know how to surf, it's a fun free activity. If you thought you were gonna be able to learn how to surf for free on a cruise, nope.

Solarium

5 out of 5

Love that they have an adults only pool area. During the day it's your best shot at getting in a pool without the massive crowds. Multiple hot tubs to choose from with great views.

Entertainment

5 out of 5
Aqua 80s was amazing even with a new crew that experienced multiple technical difficulties. Ice show was interesting. There was an impromptu 70s disco party in the royal promenade, that was really cool.

AquaTheater

5 out of 5

The new crew did amazing, minus a few hiccups with technical difficulties. We got to meet the headliner who does the tightrope, Niko! He shares an uncanny resemblance to my husband and was more than happy to take a picture together and talk about his past experiences performing on cruises.

Service and Staff

4 out of 5
With the exception of some bartenders that either ignored us or watered down our drinks, the service was overall exceptional. We had to call maintenance to get our shower head replaced and they had it fixed within the day. Our room stewardess made us some towel animals and had them pose with our sunglasses and souvenirs!

Ship Quality

4 out of 5
The cabins could use some updating but overall the ship was decorated beautifully and staff kept tables clean and walkways swept at all times.

Cabin / Stateroom

4 out of 5
Rooms could use some updating. Had to get the shower head replaced as it was an ill fitting fixture that sprayed water in all directions, maintenance had it fixed within the day. The hairdryer didn't work and we did call twice for that but nothing was ever done. A/C was finicky, most nights we needed a fan to stay cool. The bed was firm but comfortable, we prefer firm beds. By the way, the couch is closest to the balcony for those curious.

Ship tip

Don't try to do everything. You'll be exhausted from running around and that's not the point of a cruise. Grab a drink and enjoy the pools. If you miss out on anything, it's an excuse to go on another cruise! 😜

Ports of call

Nassau, Bahamas

1 out of 5
The 1 star is exclusively for Blue Lagoon Island, regarding the stingray encounter & snorkel excursion. It was raining and they wouldn't let anyone in the water on the beach. The buffet food was 1 cafeteria quality burger or hotdog for $25 a person. They also pushed our excursion back from 9am to 3pm giving us no time to explore Nassau before or after the excursion (12pm ferry to Island). The stingray encounter lasted all of 3 minutes for overpriced photos because they kicked us out right after. Didn't get to feed the rays or snorkel with them. We complained at guest services and had to fight for a 30% refund for a mostly cancelled excursion. Do not recommend Blue Lagoon.

Perfect Day At Coco Cay, Bahamas

4 out of 5
Best stop on the whole cruise, just wish we had more time, 4:30pm is too early. Water was clean, lots of fish to look at, we even saw a stingray, sea slugs and a massive living conch. Reason for 4 stars is we had purchased the deluxe drink package and every single drink was watered down at Coco Cay. At one point they gave my friend water with cranberry juice when she ordered a vodka cran. We all watched him pour 2.5 shots from a vodka bottle and thought it would be unbearably strong. Well, I don't drink ever because I hate the taste of alcohol, and I promise you it was nothing but watered down cranberry juice. Very insulting, and put a damper on the vacation for my friends that drink and paid a lot of money for that package. But other than that, Coco Cay was still the highlight of our cruise and I'll be sure to include it in the itinerary for my next cruise.

Drinks seemed watered down there in may. If they were not, my girlfriend would have been puking everywhere. I drink beer, she had maybe 10 cocktails and was perfectly sober. I couldnt even taste the alcohol

Appreciate your very detailed review. Glad you enjoyed your cruise.

Are you sure about the drink being watered down? That would be a criminal offense!

Wow. Your review is excellent and what bothers me the most is watered down drinks. I have been on numerous cruises and have never encountered that. Paying sooooooooooo much $ for the drink package and that’s what you got. That’s a big NO. Thanks for the heads up.
