Review summary

Our experience on the Oasis of the Seas was mixed. There were many things we enjoyed a great deal, and some things that were not up to par. To set the background for our review, we want to note that this was our 5th cruise on Royal Caribbean, and our 16th cruise overall. We have cruised over the Christmas/New Years holidays for the past 13 years. We have a good deal of experience with cruising at this time of the year and with multiple cruise lines. We booked a two device Internet package for the Oasis, because we anticipated having to do a little work over the holiday break. This is the first time we purchased Internet access on a cruise ship. We really enjoyed it. The Voom service on the Oasis was much better than we expected. We would definitely purchase this again. Please read the details posted in the specific categories to get our perspectives on our overall experience on the Oasis.

Embarkation

5 out of 5
Embarkation was really easy. The only line we experienced was getting through security on the way into the terminal. From the time we cleared security, it took only 15-minutes for us to walk onto the ship.

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

4 out of 5
Most of the time we ate breakfast and lunch in the Windjammer Marketplace as well as other smaller venues around the ship. We enjoyed the selection and had a good experience. We also enjoyed the choices in the main dining room. Our only disappointment was that the lemonade and kiwi strawberry drink provided by Royal Caribbean was very watered down from what we experienced on other ships. Also, most of my family wished that there were some more ethnic varieties and spicier foods (such as Asian dishes) for dinner. One of the ways they enhanced the taste of their dinners was by ordering multiple appetizers. There was a good selection of tasty dishes each day. Also, do try the warm cookie with ice cream for desert. It was our favorite.

Onboard Activities

5 out of 5
Overall, we were pleased with the variety of activities on the Oasis. We were never bored and many times we found that we had to make choices because there were so many things we wanted to do. We enjoyed the Solarium hot tubs, trivia, tours, shops, fitness center, and casino. There really is an incredible variety of things to do from morning to night.

Casino Royale

3 out of 5

My wife loves to play Texas Hold’em in the Casinos on board cruise ships. She appreciated that the Oasis had one or two tables available with live dealers for the entire cruise. This was a pleasant surprise. What she was not pleased with was the policies of the Casino. One problem she encountered was that the management often shifted the people around at the tables. On multiple occasions the management moved people from table two to table one. On two occasions when they did this, they created a second table that did not have enough players to continue the game. This left the remaining players waiting. Instead of having two balanced tables, they ended up with one full table and the other short handed. My wife questioned the decision of the manager and was told that it was the Casino’s policy to keep the number one table full. This made no business sense. Instead of the Casino collecting revenue from two tables, they were now only collecting revenue from one. The Casino managers really need to examine their policies Instead of collecting the maximum amount of revenue they ended up collecting half and leaving a lot of unhappy patrons. On these two occasions the players left out of the game never got a chance to play the rest of the night. She also felt that the Casino managers needed to provide more training for the dealers. throughout the cruise they made dealing mistakes that indicated they were not properly trained.

Day Spa and Fitness Center

5 out of 5

We used the fitness center every day of our cruise. We never had a problem gaining access to the equipment we needed for our workout. The room ranged from mildly crowded to empty.

Entertainment

5 out of 5
We genuinely enjoyed the entertainment, and we saw all the major shows: Cats, Come Fly With Me, Oasis of Dreams, Frozen in Time, Late Night Comedians, etc. We thoroughly enjoyed all of them. Two highlights that are worth seeing are the Backstage Tour in the Opal Theater and the performance of Sinatra hits sung by one of the cast members from Cats. There have been many who have criticized the performance of Cats on the ship. We attend shows on Broadway 4 - 5 times a year in NYC, and we thought thought this was a very good production. All of us thoroughly enjoyed it. Yes, it is long, because it is the actual Broadway show. Also, it may be that last production of Cats that is actually based on the original direction and choreography of the original 1983 NYC production. If you love Broadway, you will want to see it. If Broadway isn’t your thing, then try something else, but please do not write that it was terrible. It was a commendable production put on by many hard-working and talented cast members.

Children's Programs

We did not have any young children.

Service and Staff

2 out of 5
Our dining experience was the biggest disappoint of our cruise. The food was adequate, but the service was not up to par. Even though we requested a fixed dining time in one of the main dining rooms (and booked seven months in advance), we were assigned My Time Dining. We had this last year on the Anthem and it turned out to be a good experience, mostly because the dining rooms were not crowded, and we were able to have the same two servers each day. This same experience was not repeated on the Oasis. Each day when we arrived for our 5:45 PM dining time, the scheduling attendants had a difficult time finding a table for our party of 6. For the first three days we were seated in the American Icon dining room, and we had really poor service. On the first day, we waited 25 minutes between the time when we were given a menu and someone actually took our order. We also found it difficult to get someone to take a drink order from us. This same situation was repeated each day. By the fourth day we requested a table on the 4th or 5th floor. This was better, but the servers on these floors seemed annoyed that they had an extra table to serve. The service was slow, and we often found ourselves watching other people being served. We understood what was going on, the servers had developed a routine with their regular diners. We were also sure that they were anticipating some financial rewards from the patrons at the end of the week. We were just a one-day group. The situation was not an ideal for everyone. If Royal Caribbean is serious about supporting the My Time Dining concept, then they have to be committed to providing the same level of service that is given to diners who have a fixed dining time. I’m not sure how they can accomplish this, but the level of service we received was unsatisfactory. We also wish that they would be more attentive to those who request a fixed dining time. We are Platinum members who book 6 - 7 months in advance. There is no reason, why we should not have been able to get a fixed dining time.

Ship Quality

5 out of 5
Oasis is a large ship with many different communities where you can see entertainment, eat, and participate in activities. The design of the ship is beautiful and the many different areas are very distinct from each other. We marveled at the peacefulness and uniqueness of the Central Park Area. Even though there were around 6000 passengers on the ship, it never felt crowded to us. There was always something to see, do, and enjoy.

Cabin / Stateroom

5 out of 5
We were very pleased with our Ocean View cabin on the 14th flloor. It was comfortable and we slept fine on the bed. Most of the time, it was very quiet. A few times, we heard noise from the upper decks, but it was never really a problem. Our room attendant provided exceptional service. He kept our room clean and tidy multiple times a day. All our needs were taken care of. He definitely provided the best service we experienced on the ship.

Ship tip

Definitely book your dining times and night time shows in advance online in your Cruise Planner. Even though we found that seats were available for each show, we felt we enjoyed them more, because we had good seats. If you do book a show, get there when the doors open and get the seat you want. A little bit of planning and booking will greatly enhance your onboard experience.

Ports of call

Port Canaveral, Florida

5 out of 5
We were only in Port Canaveral for Embarkation and Disembarkation.

Labadee (Cruise Line Private Island)

5 out of 5
We enjoyed spending the day at Labadee. Each time we visit this place, we find new things to do and new places to explore. Most of the time, we spent relaxing on the beach.

Falmouth, Jamaica

3 out of 5
We have been to Jamaica many times before and have experienced many of the tours offered by the cruise. For this trip, we opted to just visit the shops at the pier.

Cozumel, Mexico

3 out of 5
We booked the day long Chichen Itza trip. We were glad that we did this trip, because we really wanted to see Chichen Itza. We have been trying to get to this archeological site for a few years, but were not able to find something that worked for us. Having said this, we must also note that we would not do this trip again. It was long and exhausting. Even though the brochure lists this excursion as 7 hours and 15 minutes, our actual trip began at 6:45 AM in the Opal Theater and ended at 5:30 PM we we re-entered the Oasis (10 hours, 45 minutes). These are the details. We left at 6:45 AM and took a ferry from the ship’s pier in Cozumel to Playa del Carmen on the mainland of Mexico. The ferry ride took about 45 minutes. A good number of people developed sea sickness on the crossing. It was not pleasant. After we departed the ferry, we marched single file to our buses. After boarding, we road about 3 hours to the site. After a quick bathroom break, we had a one hour and 15 minute tour of the site. After this we had about 40 minutes of free time. Next, we had a bathroom break on the way out, a 3 hour bus ride back, followed by a return 45 minute ferry ride. The rest of the time was used up in transfers and waiting in line. The ferries were crowded, and we ended up with seats next to the restroom on the bus. In addition, the tour of Chichen Itza did not include the observatory (El Caracol) or the Sacred Cenote (Ik Kil). Again, we were glad that we saw the site, but the trip was exhausting and used up a full day of our cruise.

Disembarkation

5 out of 5
Disembarkation was also easy. We used self assist and left the ship at 7:45 AM. There were no lines. We cleared Customs and were out of the terminal by 8:00 AM.

Hi "vatabuttafly"; I think the idea behind My Time Dining is that a guest makes a reservation for a particular time. In theory you should not have to wait. Our experience, was that a table was not always ready for us at the time we had scheduled. We had a party of six, which is not an overly large table. For some reason, there was not always a table of six available for us at our time of 5:45 PM. Sometimes we waited for 5 minutes and on other days we waited for up to 15 - 20 minutes. Our problem was not with the wait or the food. Our difficulties were with the level of service we received once we were seated. We were assigned the American Icon dining room. Since you will be in the Coastal Kitchen, it is likely you will have a different set of experiences. Perhaps they are better organized than the dining rooms where we ate. Your situation may be fine, and hopefully you will have a wonderful dining experience.

I'm confused about my time dining. Perhaps I'm confused with how the dining works overall. I thought my time dining means that you don't have to wait? We have my time dining and have already made our reservations around show times. We also are dining in the coastal kitchen. Any suggestions?

They sure do have the embarkation process don't pay! We loved Oasis of the seas and would definitely sail her again. We never felt crowded either.
