Oasis of the Seas

7 Night Western Caribbean (Port Canaveral Roundtrip)

Sail date: October 08, 2017

Ship: Oasis of the Seas

Cabin type: Balcony

Cabin number: 14612

Traveled as: Couple

Reviewed: 7 years ago

Review summary

Overwhelming and tiring due to the many policies, reservations, liberal children's policy. Make sure that you are aware of the many requirements, stipulations and policies that the ship has prior to booking a vacation to minimize disappointment. We did not see where they were posted prior to our booking on this ship and we certainly did not imagine that they would have such a liberal policy regarding children. Lack of communication

Embarkation

4 out of 5
The department and embarkation was great- It was the confusion of the overall cruise that needs improvement

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

3 out of 5
There was not a good dining experience for the diner menu as it was limited with costs associated with food other than the basic, chicken, piece of pork or farm raised salmon. No fresh seafood selection nor any other choices without paying. Breakfast was ok and lunch offered the most variety.

Onboard Activities

4 out of 5
The onboard activities was excellent except there was a wait or reservation required which was an impediment of taking advantage of the activities and the children had almost exclusive rights on the ship leaving little to adults enjoyment. The Solarium which was supposed to be the only adult area was also consumed at times by children.

Entertainment

4 out of 5
The shows and entertainment was spectacular except that due to the requirement(s) to make reservations that could/was cancelled many times caused a disruption and hiccups in our enjoyment and trues vacation. The children's policy which allowed children to be out until 1am put a damper on being able to enjoy the adults night clubs due to parents parading their children and enabling their behavior to overtake the dance floor and impede the entertainment as well as the ability to enjoy an adult night out

Children's Programs

Did not bring children aboard

Service and Staff

3 out of 5
Waiters- in dinner setting (Silk) Awesome as the head waiter was always available and as much as possible accommodating Steward(s) - a lot of prejudicial and preferential treatment- some of them just walked right past us in the dining and complimentary offerings Ship Personnel- mixed reviews as some if not many were not on the same page and communication- was not aware of the children (in strollers) as well as up to and including teenagers allowed to be in a night club that serves alcohol with and overtaking the adults: Requirement to make continuous reservations for complimentary showings which may/not be cancelled and thus rescheduled at your time placing strain and more of a scheduled vacation-room charge to bring food instead of allowing the mandatory charged tips to self pay. It felt more like a working vacation that tired us out than the leisure we anticipated that we planned for. They could have chosen a more diverse itinerary for our shore excursions and that fact that not only did Nassau look devastated and isolated they had a Holiday which left scattered emptiness to walk to. The communication was less desirous than a professional would expect given the elaborate ship planning and magnitude.

Ship Quality

4 out of 5
While the ship design was fantastic the rooms were dated and the sheets left bite marks on my legs. The bed spread was more like hand me down from my grandmother than that one would expect on a ship of this exuberance.

Ports of call

Nassau, Bahamas

1 out of 5
No as this is a port that you give your children for their first weekend cruise as almost everyone offers this port for enticement and not as a promotion or offering to pay. Nothing there worth seeing or stopping for.

Cozumel, Mexico

3 out of 5
The locals were friendly and expressed a desire to want business from tourists but again this is a port almost every cruise ship offers and we have been there enough times on a cruise to give a tutorial.

Costa Maya (Mahahual), Mexico

3 out of 5
The locals were friendly and expressed a desire to want business from tourists but again this is a port almost every cruise ship offers. Not much offered at this port except drinks and the shows at port that the locals offered.

Disembarkation

4 out of 5
Great was not in a rush due to flight on same day. Enjoyed the crew although only in one dining area so we unfortunately did not get the memo and missed the experience.

Yea. It’s 100% DISAPPOINTEDMOM.

twangster    7 years ago

No worries, I think most here are on the same page.

I missed that. I completely thought this was the DISAPPOINTEDMOM post. Long day. Sorry for the confusion.

Pretty sure they aren’t responding to you knight1103! 🤣 Those responding are in reference to the original post and the last one by “disappointedmom.”

If everyone is assuming I am DISAPPOINTED with a new profile maybe you should pay attention and read what I wrote. I was saying my son has been on a total of 4 cruise from ages 4 to 6. Going on 5th in May. I do not understand what policies she is talking about.

Are you DISSAPPOINTEDMOM w/ a new profile? 🤔 I love cruising the most because I can enjoy myself "with" my kids and "without" them! They love the kids clubs! And so do I! It makes vacationing with children stress free. RC even can come get your wrestless kids from dinner so you can finish eating yours. The staff has even cut their meat each night and had their favorite drink ready when we arrive. Just these little subtle things I appreciate. Then I give extra tip last night.

We really enjoyed the ship with my 4 grands ages 7-14. My grands had a blast!! Plenty to do for adults and children alike. When I travel adults only I have just as much fun, but then again, the kids don’t bother me!

What "liberal policies?" I'm gathering you didn't like kids being involved in activities? Maybe you're traveling childless and they annoyed you? Or maybe you have kids but are overprotective? I'm confused because this is advertised as and is obviously a family boat. My kids (aged 4-18, at the time) had a blast and we never once worried, even as very protective parents. I'm curious to hear the clarification on this complaint.

I'm so confused by this...I've taken my kids everytime and never had the complaints she had

Why did you take this cruise?

Charlou    7 years ago

Good observation @ljshields4060. 😂

Were you & DISSAPOINTEDMOM by any chance on the same cruise?

knight1103    7 years ago

My son was on the Oasis at 5 Allure at 6 and going on Harmony at 7 He had a blast. Not aware or sure what you mean by "Liberal Children Policy". Please explain.

skstokes    7 years ago

We have been on the Oasis twice and I have no idea what you are complaining about. My 10 yr granddaughter had a ball. Maybe the parents need to be more accountable concerning their children. Before swing the first time we knew what the policies were regarding most everything. If you don't go with kids try a different line, possibly Holland. They are more for adults.

Oasis is a beautiful ship. A little research goes a long way. Reservations for shows are used to manage the fact that they can't make a theater large enough for everyone on board. Shows are offered multiple times on different days. Reservations have been used for five plus years now. Activities like zip line or flow rider require signing a waiver electronicly, once for the whole trip. "Liberal children policy" - what does that mean? Lack of comprehension perhaps?

sfratus    7 years ago

What kind of policies? We are cruising in 17 more days with our 12 year-old and 7 year-old daughters. I just want to be prepared
