The NCL Star is one of their oldest ships but has been nicely renovated. Missing some amenities from their larger ships but we had a good experience overall. One issue needing immediate attention is that the Satellite TV (i.e. CNBC, BBC, etc.) was horrendous (reception was extremely spotty) and the internet is not worth any additional cost. We had 280 free internet minutes but with the slowness of the system, it was more like 100 minutes at best.
Embarkation
4 out of 5
Easy and Quick due to elevated Latitude Status.
Ship experiences
Food and Dining
5 out of 5
Food quality was excellent in all areas with ample portions available and served.
Onboard Activities
4 out of 5
Hot Tubs were just right as the average outside daily temperature was about 62 degrees F. Pools not so much.
Entertainment
3 out of 5
About as good as can be expected.
Service and Staff
5 out of 5
In my opinion, NCL really excels in this area. All staff were personable, friendly and concerned about how they could serve us better. The room steward worked around our schedule and took excellent care of our Balcony Room.
Ship Quality
4 out of 5
We were in the forward section with close proximity to the Stardust Auditorium which was the main meeting point for our many shore excursions and other entertainment nearby.
Cabin / Stateroom
4 out of 5
Good location with the exception of reduced outward visibility due to increased structure around the balcony instead of being wide open like other balconies we have been on.
Ship tip
Best Cabin Area would be in the Mid to Forward Section as it is close to the exits, auditorium, casino, and easy to get to the restaurants.
One of my bucket lists to visit (D-Day Normandy Invasion Beaches) as my father was a USAAF B-17 Crew Member and had rarely spoken about his WWII experiences. I am also a retired US Air Force member and very interested in military history throughout the world.
Took the Ypres Battlefield, Cemetery, and WWI Museum Excursion which was one of the best excursions of the cruise. The Tour Guide was a retired British Battlefield Cemetery Director who was responsible for many of the UK burial sites throughout the area.
Took the canal boat cruise which was the best way to see the internal portion of Amsterdam. Since my wife has mobility issues, this tour was excellent for her with the exception of getting on and off the boat.
Was looking forward to see the very old Viking Boat found in the early 1900's but exhibit was closed due to a total museum facility overhaul. Other than that, the excursion was pleasant.
Being of full Swedish Descent and knowing our descendants were from Southwest Sweden, the Gothenburg Western Islands Tour was also high on our excursion list. The tour did not disappoint with the exception of the tour guide who had difficulty with the English language. (Usually did German tours).
