Summer 2010 Cruise Review

Sail Date: June 05, 2010

Reviewed: 6 years ago

Traveled As: Couple

Room Type: Balcony

Ship had construction in numerous staterooms throughout ship, creating noise starting at 8am each day. No theater. Indoor viewing area almost non-existing outside of the bufffet area (if your stateroom doesn't have a balcony or some other outdoor area, you'll be hard-pressed to locate a seat where you can gaze upon the beauty of the Inside Passage/Alaska or elsewhere for that matter) that is somewhat protected from the weather/wind. The NCL Star is not a good ship to take Alaska cruises on.

Pros: Excursions

Cons: Lack of quality, most notably in the chocoholic event

Recommends Norwegian Star? No.

Good, but, be forewarned about the incessant alcohol hawking at each/every event. And the Bingo is ripe to extract large sums from your wallet, with scams/caveats at these events.
Food and Dining
Dining room wait staff very attentative, but food quality lacking. Steaks tasted like liver. Salad dressing was very watery.
Ship Quality
Overall, ship was clean. No large quiet viewing areas. No theater. Stateroom TVs are something from the 70's; small (no LCDs or plasmas here).
Cabin / Stateroom
Balcony room very good. Bed very comfortable. Space around king bed adequate, but luggage rack/tray almost non-existent, making it difficult to extract cloths that are not hung/stored in closet.
Service and Staff
For the most part, excellent. But you need to stay on top of the concierge when ordering/requesting stuff over the phone. Dining room staff very attentive. Stateroom stewards, for the most part, also very attentive.

Announcements hard to hear, except for the Assistant-Cruise Director hawking Bingo.

Windows somewhat dirty or water stained, making buffet window viewing difficult.
Ketchikan, Alaska
Skagway, Alaska
Zip lining over tree canopy and ravines - what a blast
Don't Miss: Zip lining
Prince Rupert, British Columbia
Eagles, lots and lots of Bald Eagles - sitting in trees and flying overhead
Don't Miss: Bald Eagles in trees near port
Juneau, Alaska
Mendenhall Glacier. Red Dog Saloon
Don't Miss: Kayaking Mendenhall lake
