Review summary

Our trip to Alaska was enhanced by the Norwegian Star. The ship was very nice, our staterooms were far better than any we have had on our last 3 cruises, and the entertainment and food were great.

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

3 out of 5
The food and variety were great. We absolutely loved the Aqua restaurant as far as the service, food and atmosphere. We returned there for several meals. We weren't impressed with the extra charges to go to "specialty" restaurants so we didn't go to them. We felt everything should have been all-inclusive since you are a captive audience.

Entertainment

3 out of 5
We enjoyed all the shows that we went to.

Service and Staff

3 out of 5
We did have some language difficulty with some of the staff. The management staff was wonderful and very easy to work with. We felt like they were really their to help us. We did feel that the automatic gratuity made a BIG difference in how the wait staff treated us...not all of them, but there were several.

Ship Quality

3 out of 5
We did find that one restroom area always seemed to have water on the floor and wasn't that clean, but the rest of the ship was good.

Cabin / Stateroom

3 out of 5
We liked our stateroom. The size was nice, the bathrooms were well layed out and being mid-ship was perfect.

Ports of call

Skagway, Alaska

5 out of 5
We loved this port the best. The town was a lot of fun. Went to the Red Onion Saloon, and also did a lot of shopping as the prices were terrific. Went on the White Pass train trip, it was good, but not $112 good. Felt like that was a lot of money to just sit on a train and not be able to get off and look around.
Don't Miss: Red Onion Saloon

Ketchikan, Alaska

Had a great time, walked all over the town (didn't need to take transportation) and really enjoyed the Lumberjack show. Also we saw tons of Salmon in the river on our walk.
Don't Miss: Lumberjack Show

Prince Rupert, British Columbia

Definitely a waste of time. The town was like any other town, not very easy to walk for those people with walkers, or those in wheel chairs. Found the prices to be very high. We didn't stay in town very long, and I don't believe too many people did.

Juneau, Alaska

Pros: Seeing Alaska for the first time.

Cons: We found the service that we received in 2 restaurants, the Blue Lagoon and Versailles, not up to the standards of NCL. We attributed this to the automatic 15% gratuity. Most people on the ship were great, but the Blue Lagoon and Versailles restaurants left a lot to be desired as far as the service
