Enjoyable cruise by jmcc827

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: Norwegian Sky / Destination: Cuba

This was a cruise that was booked for our honeymoon because it worked with our time off (original plan was to go glamping for a week). We chose Cuba because, well, why not? This was our first time on Norwegian, and we had been told by other Norwegian "veterans" not to judge our Norwegian experience off the Sky. We were actually impressed at the port, long lines to check in and get your visa's, but NCL had a gentleman who was in charge of ensuring that guests were directed to the next open assistant, very smooth. Then, there were crew members to greet you as you actually boarded and a hand wash attendant ("Washy Washy!!) before you entered. Our stateroom was small but clean and finding our way to the Oslo Deck was a little adventure (its like deck 6.5 and you have to go to deck 7 to access it). The mandatory evacuation drill was very hot and very noisy-there is construction going on at the NCL port which made hearing some of the announcements very difficult. Cuba was old and tired. Looking beyond the facade of the buildings, it was obviously once a beautiful city. Perhaps we will return there someday to see if the city has been rebuilt. The food was very good, the buffets were nice, slightly different choices on each side of the buffet and lunch time sandwiches were nice! (Upon embarkation we just really wanted a light lunch and the tuna salad croissants were excellent). We did experience on hiccup with the cruise, and that was our mini-fridge being locked up on the second night of our cruise. It took several attempts to get anyone to come and unlock it so we could put our waters in to cool. Overall, the cruise was good. We enjoyed our time on the Sky and would likely cruise on that ship again. Disembarkation was easy and smooth.

Historical Havana is beautiful! by Mhenley3523

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: Norwegian Sky / Destination: Cuba

We booked passage on the Norwegian Sky and departed 9/03/18and returned 9/07/17. Although this was my 18th cruise, it was my first on NCL and the experience was memorable. One of the most amazing features of this cruise venue is free bar service throughout the entire cruise, no fees whatsoever and your pick of anything offered in each bar, lounge and restaurant. Typically our drink tab runs anywhere from $500 to $1,000 or more depending on the cruise length so that was a wonderful perk. The food was good to excellent and there was plenty of it as well as varied selections. We upgraded to a balcony stateroom on the 9th deck (9215) starboard side. The stateroom was small but the balcony was delightful. There were many shows and activities onboard and the entertainment was enjoyable with high impact singers and dancers and an excellent comedienne who offered both a family and adult show later in the evening on one night. You depart Port of Miami promptly around 5 pm EST and cruise overnight to Havana arriving around 7 am. We were fortunate to be berthed next to a visiting Ecuadorian Navy cadet training tall ship the Guayas which was one of the best surprises of the trip. The Havana cruise terminal is located directly across the street of downtown and the view upon entering Havana harbor is very picturesque. We disembarked, went through Cuban customs (an easy process) and after a short walk to the street were in a different world. What impressed us the most was the architecture and artistry of the Cuban people. Although a poor country, the area we visited (clearly intended to impress tourists) was clean, well maintained and yet the buildings were amazing, some built in the early 1500's. We walked around for about 2 and a half hours whereupon the heat got to us and we decided to return back to ship. One does need to convert US dollars to Cuban pesos and that is easily done in the cruise terminal where they have a currency exchange. Expect your US $ to be worth about .83 cents in pesos with the conversion and fees. As it turns out we did not spend much on shore since food and drink was free onboard, so why pay to savor Cuban cuisine (expensive) on shore? As Florida residents we are used to heat but not Cuban heat and humidity, thus our exploration was short but memorable. We did go on the Tropicana nightclub/cabaret excursion which was offered by NCL and was worthwhile. The fee for that is $200 pp, albeit we got a discount through our Starwood Preferred booking and status allowing us to save some $65 pp. We were transported by a modern, clean and luxurious air conditioned bus from the terminal to the club. The Tropicana we learned has been in continuous business since 1939 and it looked wonderful, similar to being in any swank place to be in Miami Beach. The show was amazing, albeit all singing was in Spanish (which we don't speak) but the vocals were still amazing as was the dancing. The show runs two hours with no break, performance after performance. Upon arrival the women are greeted with a Carnation, the men are given a Cuban cigar. Each table in our group had two bottles of Cuban Rum and colas which was included in the charge as well as some nut snacks on each table. Our seats were close to the main stage and that is all part of the NCL package. The show ended close to midnight whereupon we returned back to the ship and had wonderful memories to take back with us. You can take photos in the show by paying a $5 fee for pictures or $10 for video based on the honor system. We did not bring any cameras or smartphones with us since we presumed pictures were forbidden, but surprise if you pay they are not. All in all it was a wonderful cruise, NCL impressed us, we would highly recommend this cruise and cruise line for a short but memorable visit to Cuba. We had a great time from the time we left to the time we arrived back at the port. Access on and off the ship was quick, efficient and painless. We did take our own bags off with us and had no problem being one of the first off to our waiting vans for offsite parking. One last thing, we celebrated our 38th wedding anniversary onboard with a specialty restaurant meal in Cagney's, the ships steakhouse and the cuisine and ambiance was both enjoyable and worth the upgrade, with excellent service in all dining venues."

Norwegian Sky is a small... by sunschild57

Sail date: /
Ship: Norwegian Sky

Norwegian Sky is a small ship with nice size cabins and bathrooms. I was also surprised to find a mini fridge in the room, there was no in cabin fridge on Royal Caribbean Empress of the Seas. Norwegian offers free Alcoholic beverages but bottled water costs 5.50 plus 20% gratuity. Free style dining was great and the food was good. My only complaint about the ship is that I couldnā€™t find a quiet nook to just hang out and relax.

Other than the pool being crowded on the day at sea, the cruise was great! We would not have needed the meal upgrade.

We enjoyed our cruise! ... by AdultDayCare

Sail date: /
Ship: Norwegian Sky

We enjoyed our cruise! The Ultimate Havana excursion was a nice overview. There are only 3 stops so thankfully our tour guide was extremely knowledgeable. Magdalia (?) was amazing! WE DID NOT NEED TO CONVERT OUR MONEY. There was only one place that didn't take it at the indoor market but you were able to exchange at a location near the front. We usually cruise with Carnival. At times we feel that all the picture taking on Carnival is annoying. But we actually missed that on Norwegian. We were on the Sky and the rooms appear smaller than that of Carnival. The Norwegian Sky free drinks DID NOT DISAPPOINT, enjoyed the Free Style dining option, food was about the same, but we felt that overall the Carnival Staff is noticeably better. There is a difference on the lines. It all depends on the type of vacation you're looking for. If I were cruising alone or wanted something more relaxing I'd do Norwegian. If I wanted to party and desired more entertainment options it would be Carnival. 4 of 5 Stars due to 1-Salvatore at Guest Services not knowing his job and had I not read everything and insist to book the Transfer to Fort Lauderdale airport for $25, we would have had to use another option. 2-The Transfer Bus driver basically harassing everyone for a Tip as you exited at the Airport, asking everyone, "Nothing for me?!" The folks in Cuba didn't beg that much!!! 3-Chen, our room steward, was really nice, but there was a shoe and something else left by the previous occupants under my bed. Not being petty, just providing details for those that would like to know. I LOVE Cruising and it's our preferred mode of travel. You can't beat the convenience and cost. We usually travel with a group of 6-10 and there is something for everyone! My neice had a destination wedding recently and our group of 42 had an amazing time! 24+ will return in February to check out the Dominican Republic! Looking to also visit Alaska next year and may try a different line. I think Cruising is AdultDayCare at it's finest! My license plate frame reads: MY OTHER CAR IS A CRUISE SHIP. See you on the seas! šŸ˜

I have a love/hate relationship... by brianpeak01

Sail date: /
Ship: Norwegian Sky

I have a love/hate relationship with this ship. Iā€™ve done this trip twice and the crew both times are excellent. Super friendly. Very nice and kind. Iā€™m really impressed with them. The food in the buffet is a total let down. Actually in general the food is a let down but better in restaurant. They are saving money on the food to break even on the open bar for sure. Also keep in mind the service charge on this ship is higher than other ships - not sure why, perhaps because of the open bar? Itā€™s $19.99 vs the normal $13.95 per night per person. This ship needs a refurbishment big time. Itā€™s from 1999 with a refurb in 2013 and its time to refurb again everything looks really tired. The open bar is fun I love that not even a swipe of the card just walk up and order. Overall this is a cheap and basic cruise but I still had fun - twice!

Overall this was a great... by Sassynista

Sail date: /
Ship: Norwegian Sky

Overall this was a great trip. The location 9f my room 7003 ocean view was near the elevator and easy access to casino, and customers service. The con is it was only a few doors down from the kids arcaded. Luckily we never heard any kids or noise until the last night. The drinks were great, no long lines with the open bar. Comparing it to my last cruise with Royal, this cruise lack great entertainment. The club is great and the Dj was awesome. They had a white party that was awesome. The food was okay nothing to brag about. The buffet food for breakfast lunch and dinner was good. The trip to Havana was awesome!!! Word of advice book everything on your own, itā€™s cheaper than doing it through the cruise line. You can just get off, even if you donā€™t have anything planned. We got on and off the ship throughout the day. We booked a old car tour it was great only 85 cuc which was equally to 85us. If you have euros the exchange for cuc is better than us to cuc. Across the street from the ship in Cuba there is a little hole in the wall pizza shop, you get entire med pie for 1.00 cuc. Tasted great. Donā€™t buy cigars off the street they are made of banana leaves. Go to a real shop that sell cigars, rum and coffee. Taxis are everywhere, but be careful try to get one from taxis stands or they will try to over charge you. Friendly people!!!! There nothing really fancy about this ship, just go and enjoy yourself, because they lack many things the other ship has to offer.

Customer service and lack of communication were all failed in my opinion. I've always liked NCL, this trip didn't live up to the expectations at all.
