Review summary

Norwegian let down a lot of previously loyal customers. The published itinerary showed one tender port, and the remainder to be docks. It turned out that all ports were tender ports except for two. Tendering was a big hassle, and Priority guests did not get priority for the return tender. It may sound petty, but for the price of a Suite and promises for priority tendering - what are we getting for the extra cost? They never provided priority for return tendering. They canceled three of the eight ports, including Dublin which is a huge port to miss, and communication about the cancellations was poor. The first two ports that the captain decided to scrap, I saw it on the navigation channel and called the Concierge to ask him why we weren't stopping - the second one he wasn't even aware of - but they didn't make an announcement until an hour later. For the third one, they disabled the navigation channel so nobody would see that they blew past the port. They claimed it was because of rough seas for tendering - well, they were on the itinerary as docking ports, so tendering shouldn't have been an issue, and also Dublin was sunny and had calm seas all day. To "compensate" the guests for the inconvenience of missing 3 out of 8 ports, they gave a $100 nonrefundable stateroom credit to each cabin... then closed the ship store permanently when they went into Portland even though there was a full night at sea left, so guests could not use any remaining nonrefundable credit at the ship's store. This is my first trip on Norwegian, but I was also surprised at the "Service Charge" they automatically add on $25/person/day - $500 for a 10 day cruise - does not cover tips for the people actually waiting on us, and none of it is discretionary. They state it is for the "behind the scenes" crew. So we were still expected to tip our butlers and concierge on top of that. I am used to "mandatory" tips being collected and distributed to those who served the guests, but it that is not what the "Service Charge" really is. I have doubts as to where it even goes. They also offered a laundry special - $30 for a bag of laundry which is a great deal. But it would have been nice to know that before we packed enough for a full 10 day cruise - we could have probably packed half as much, but by the time you are on the ship it's a little late to pack lighter. I'd say to chalk it up to remember for the next cruise, but there won't be a next cruise for us on Norwegian. I am also done with the nickel and diming of customers at every turn - pay extra to get a decent meal (that wasn't even that good); the included wifi is 150 minutes, so you can't leave it on and use it when you need to because the minutes run out even when it is idle - but that is to get you to upgrade to unlimited service, but even that service wouldn't allow streaming of any sort, including facetime. For that you have to upgrade to the unlimited premium wifi. And even that is not any faster - it just unlocks streaming. Our plan offered "free" unlimited bar, but you have to pay gratuities on its value that would add $500 to the bill - so you have to decline the free unlimited bar to avoid that service fee. I guess I can see why they do this petty stuff for the guests paying under $1000 for an inside stateroom, but it's tough to justify for guests paying ten times that on an owner's suite.

Embarkation

4 out of 5
Priority embarkation went smoothly for Suites guests. We were brought past the long lines and had virtually no wait.

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

2 out of 5
They couldn't seem to get the food right, even in the paid Specialty restaurants. The best meal there was the Teppanyaki (hibachi grill), and how good can a hibachi meal really be? But everything else was so bad, we ate Teppanyaki three times in a 10 night cruise. Suite guests can eat in Moderno for breakfast and lunch, but the menus didn't change all week. Sometimes it was good, other times it took over an hour to have breakfast or a simple lunch. Meat was always way overdone, even fresh carved roast beef was as dry as shoe leather. The Brazilian Steakhouse was good, but they pushed the poorer cuts and were obviously rationing the filet and lamb.

Onboard Activities

1 out of 5
The cruise director had zero personality and never connected with the guests on any level. The activities were lackluster and usually didn't have enough materials for the guests (How do you run out of slips of paper for origami, or napkins for napkin folding?) These were the highlights among the full slate of activities, which also includes "Library book check out" a couple of times per day. It was pathetic. No pool parties, pumping music, zero energy. By the end of the week, the guests seemed to be walking about the ship with a blank expression like zombies.

Entertainment

2 out of 5
The headline singer was not good at all - off pitch, not into the music, boring - we saw her once and tried to avoid her from then on. They had a magician who was pretty good but not great, and aerialists that were just adequate - nothing awed the crowd in any way.

Children's Programs

No children in our party

Service and Staff

4 out of 5
This should be a one star & 5 star answer - we had an excellent room steward, but our butler was a complete waste. He ignored our requests and preferences, and was not personable at all. Our traveling companions in another room had an excellent butler and she ended up taking care of us better than our own butler did.

Ship Quality

2 out of 5
How can the same dirty dishes be on a stairwell for days? Railings in the elevators were missing fasteners, shades in the Owners Suites were out of their tracks, wouldn't roll all of the way up, were torn - This is a northern Scotland tour in July - it never gets dark out, so good shades are a necessity . The same bird crap was on our suite windows for the entire cruise -when did they stop cleaning the ship when it was in port?

Cabin / Stateroom

3 out of 5
The suite should be great - it is very large with panoramic views. We jokingly complained that it is such a long walk to the bathroom. However, the window shades were a disaster and never worked properly. Also, although there are panoramic windows on front, side, and rear, there are permanent shades on the side view windows, so you don't get the side view. The seating in the room is adequate, but the lounge chairs for taking in the views are not very comfortable.

Ship tip

Find another ship on a different carrier.

Ports of call

Copenhagen, Denmark

5 out of 5
On our own - take the boat tour and can walk or take train everywhere else. See Tivoli gardens. Train from the airport to city center is definitely the way to go.

NEWHAVEN HARBOUR (EDINBURGH), SCOTLAND

4 out of 5
Book a private tour on your own - castles, distilleries, beautiful views - go to the highlands. You could take the Edinburgh bus to town - it's not far. Priority tendering from the ship went well, but they had no priority for Suite guests for the return, so we had to wait ~1 hour in the rain for the return to the ship.

Invergordon (Inverness & Loch Ness), Scotland

4 out of 5
Book a private tour on your own - castles, distilleries, beautiful views. There is nothing at the port, so you have to arrange on your own. Loch Ness is nothing special - go North.

Kirkwall, Orkney Islands, Scotland

5 out of 5
Our favorite - rent a car and explore. We found the highlight of our trip there, the Woolshed in Evie. Look it up.

Belfast, Northern Ireland

4 out of 5
We took a private tour to Giant's Causeway - the private tour got to the best sights before the tour buses. Belfast is just another commercial district with a Titanic obsession.

Portland (Weymouth), England, UK

4 out of 5
They provide a bus into Weymouth - a typical beach/shore town. Lots of shopping and restaurants, but mostly touristy.

Southampton (London), England

4 out of 5
We took a private car to Portsmouth for museum hopping.

Disembarkation

5 out of 5
Priority disembarking for Suite guests was fast and easy.

Sorry your cruise wasn't up to par

I stopped cruising with them years ago when the ship broke down and our cruise ended early and they didn't reimburse us. I don't trust thus cruise line. Thank you for confirmation. They e been getting away with shenanigans for years with no repercussions.

Note to self: Keep staying away from NCL. The reviews are never good. 🤣

I have friends that use to love Norwegian now they refuse to sail with them. While some things are beyond the control of the Captain and crew, communication is within their control and it sounds as though it was lacking. Hope your next cruise is better.

Understand your dissatisfaction however ports can change with out notice. Sorry you were disappointed with parts of your cruise. Thank you for sharing your experience.

The Ports can change or be canceled at any time. Safety is the first priority. Never ever heard of priority tendering to get BACK ON the ship.
