Disappointing relative to other cruises that we've been on ... and we cruise a lot.

Review summary

We cruise a lot and the Breakaway seemed far more crowded than the other ships that we've been on. Also, NCL has gotten to the point where they are kind of the "Spirit Airlines" of cruise lines. They seemed to be nickel and diming us for just about everything including their "Free at Sea" program in which hardly anything offered is really free as you do come up against some type of charge using these "Free" services. In fact, we've been noticing a trend on our NCL trips where the costs are going up with charges being more frequent but quality seems to be going down. They were once our preferred cruise line but no longer.

Onboard Activities

Ship was way way too crowded to really enjoy anything. Seems that the Breakaway has very little common space relative to the number of passengers that it carries. Just seemed like wall to wall people just about everywhere we went.

Entertainment

3 out of 5
Stage shows were great. Lounges were generally good ... if you could get in as they were all packed.

Children's Programs

No children with us.

Service and Staff

2 out of 5
An overcrowded ship generally results in a lesser quality of service. Most staff did their best to work through it, but there were some individual that just seemed downright rude.

Ship Quality

1 out of 5
Again, way too little common space for the number of passengers and it showed throughout the cruise also in the way the ship was being maintained.

Cabin / Stateroom

4 out of 5
Was a bit on the smaller side (vs other cruises we've been on) but the large balcony provided us with relief from the crowds on the ship,

Ship tip

Get used to having people around you at all times and in very close proximity (especially at the pool and in lounges)

Ports of call

New Orleans, Louisiana

5 out of 5
One of the best cities in the US to visit ... and it was Mardi Gras!

Costa Maya (Mahahual), Mexico

2 out of 5
Nothing there to see other than the port area. Nearest interesting place (ruins) were an hour's drive away

Harvest Caye, Belize

1 out of 5
Maybe the worst port experience that we've ever had. Were trapped on this island where we were at the mercy of NCL and their desire to charge us for just about everything on the island.

Coxen Hole, Roatan, Bay Islands, Honduras

OK port stop. We booked a private tour (cheaper than a ship excursion). Not really a lot to see but was fun going to the animal preserves ... which are commerical enterprises rather than national parks.

Cozumel, Mexico

5 out of 5
Lots to see there. Again, booked a private tour (cheaper than a ship exursion). Beautiful island with an interesting history and got to see/experience pretty much all of it.

Your base fare includes cabin, food in the MDR, buffet, and depending on the ship sometimes other places, juices and tap water, along with most of the entertainment. There is no requirement to spend any additional money for anything else on the ship. They offer extras that some people may want to do, and they can pay for doing so. If you want all inclusive you’d be better suited on a luxury cruise line.

No one is “trapped” on Harvest Caye, just return to the ship for free dining

Appreciate your feedback. Sorry this cruise didn’t meet your expectations.

They have always charged gratuity for free at sea promotion. Not sure why you claim they are now charging for that when they always did.

Cruising is definitely not what it used to be. It’s always important to read the fine print on anything. Nothing is ever truly free.
