Ship: Norwegian Breakaway

Cabin type: Balcony

Traveled as: Family (older children)

Review summary

My 7th cruise, 2nd with Norwegian (Pearl). Have done RC, Carnival, and Disney before. After Disney, Norwegian is my favorite. I think Norwegian's food is the best of all the lines I've been on. Would definitely do Norwegian again & Breakaway again. Had a great time!

Embarkation

The cruiseline's part was very smooth. My only complaint was the Port of New Orleans' area where there was lots of construction & long lines of traffic trying to park.

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

5 out of 5
We didn't do any specialty restaurants & were worried the complimentary venues would be lesser quality, but found the food varied & delicious everywhere we ate! Norwegian has great food!

Garden Café

4 out of 5

Didn't expect much from the main buffet, but was pleasantly surprised by the taste and variety. Tasted fresh. Even had a small Indian food selection! A little hectic, crowd-wise at peak times, but manageable.

O'Sheehan's Neighborhood Bar and Grille

4 out of 5

Delicious hamburgers!

Onboard Activities

5 out of 5
We had a teen & tween & specifically chose the Breakaway for its activities & weren't disappointed. We enjoyed the ropes course, pools & water slides, kids club, sports complex, mini-golf, ping pong, shows, Family dodgeball, shuffleboard & mini-golf & ping pong challenges, Q&A, Art auction, Dance class, Escape the Big Top, etc.

Guest Services

4 out of 5

Answered politely and promptly and with a smile the 3 times I had to go.

Ropes Course

4 out of 5

Having never done a ropes course, it was cool!

Mini Golf

4 out of 5

Colorful, challenging. My son would've liked it to have more holes other than just the 9.

Jogging Track

2 out of 5

Really small & right where there is a lot of cross traffic. Not very well-placed.

Pulse Fitness Center

4 out of 5

Clean. Had all the equipment I needed. Went in the mornings before 8am & was never crowded.

Entertainment

3 out of 5
Liked the comedy magician & Burn the Floor. Thought Rock of Ages was too raunchy, left after 20 minutes.

Card Room

3 out of 5

Nice, quiet place to get away and play with family. They don't really have many of their own games, so bring a few of your own favorites.

Children's Programs

5 out of 5
11 year old son went to kids club 2 different days & loved it!

Service and Staff

5 out of 5
Excellent service. Always friendly & ready to help.

Ship Quality

4 out of 5
Looked attractive & clean. No complaints.

Cabin / Stateroom

5 out of 5
We had originally booked an interior room to save money but were upgraded to Balcony & loved it!

Ship tip

Don't miss Escape the Big Top with your family, especially if you've never done an escape room activity before. Fill out comments cards with favorable reviews for all the servers who did great jobs on the cruise. They depend on our positive remarks.

Ports of call

New Orleans, Louisiana

3 out of 5
Construction traffic inconvenient.

Cozumel, Mexico

4 out of 5
In spite of the fact it poured most of the day, we still had fun at Chankanaab & the dolphin adventure.

Costa Maya (Mahahual), Mexico

4 out of 5
Much better than we expected. Totally artificial cruiseline-owned port, but nice facilities. Take a taxi to the actual town, though.

Disembarkation

5 out of 5
Smoothest, quickest disembarkation of the 7 cruises we've ever been on. We ate a leisurely breakfast & then just walked off with our luggage at 9:30.
