Review summary

Overall it was somewhat enjoyable. The first 5 days were very nice before the weather got bad. It always puts a bad spin on the trip when mother nature decides to join in. As I stated earlier....when everyone is stuck inside in bad weather the ship is too crowded. Even though they try to run different entertainment options there is not enough seating. The kids get bored easy because the pools, slides, hot tubs, mini golf, basketball, ropes course and basically everything outside gets closed and all are crowded to the inside public areas. It would be smart if NCL designed a ship under domes that could be closed over such areas. I think most of the servers and room stewards were very friendly even though tired and overworked.

Embarkation

It went a little smoother than before. It's not easy getting 4000 people off and on a ship and through customs you have to be patient.

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

I was pretty okay with it but all the complementary dining rooms have pretty much the same menu. Traveling with picky eaters who don't eat fish or red meat make the selection difficult. Sometimes it would be nice to be able to go to a deli for a turkey sandwich or something like that. The buffet does pretty good at mixing things up sometimes. My daughter says she gets tired of eating the same two items but that is because she's picky.

Chill Bar

My husband had a really hard time getting a bourbon and seven. Maltings and Shakers got it right but everyone else kept putting a sour mix in it....

Onboard Activities

Entertainment

Rock of Ages and Burn the floor are both excellent all three times I saw them. The cirques was canceled due to weather. Melvin is great. Could listen to him all night but again the seating is limited and I'm too old to stand for long.

Syd Norman's Pour House

2 out of 5

I'm very sad that Charlie Love is gone and the rock band that was in his place was not that good. The Jazz club was my favorite so now I really don't have a favorite spot.

Children's Programs

my grandson went to splash academy and was bored. I can't say it was the fault of the venue or just my grandsons mood.

Service and Staff

5 out of 5
Ferdinand our room steward was so nice I wanted to take him home with me. It was our second time having him and he was so polite and accommodating.

Ship Quality

3 out of 5
There is no seating available in the common areas when everyone is confined to the inside. Being I'm 71 it made it very difficult to go to enjoy any of the functions.

Cabin / Stateroom

4 out of 5
It looked just like all the other balcony cabins. Our steward kept it clean and well stocked. It works great for two people...crowded with not enough storage for three. I can't even imagine getting four in there....but the option of the pull down from the ceiling is there. I don't like the fact that you can't leave your balcony door open for night breezes because of the wind that howls through the room. But overall its doable. The Breakaway is definitely do for some perking up.

Ports of call

New York, New York Did not visit port

We left from here but did not visit anything.

Port Canaveral, Florida Did not visit port

I haven't gotten off here. Nothing near the port.

Great Stirrup Cay (Cruise Line Private Island), Bahamas

4 out of 5
Finally made it to this port. It's hit or miss if you will. You have to tender to the port and even the slightest wind makes for a very bumpy ride. The Cay itself is very nice. It's still being worked on. Lots of chairs but they filled up fast. A lot of walking if its hot. Drinks and food offerings are good and most covered if you have the drink card from the ship and free barbecue is put on by the ship was quite good. The water there is just so pretty.

Nassau, Bahamas Did not visit port

The weather got bad and the wind was too strong so they decided to skip this port.

Disembarkation

much quicker than previous. You just have to be patient for people to get through customs. Most of the hold ups are in the Port not the ship.

It is not really the cruise lines or the ships fault. It is the location of the port. We had rough seas all the way to Bermuda last April out of NY. It is just the way it goes that time of the year.

Sailing in the winter out of NY is always a gamble. The weather can be unpredictable. Sounds like you a had a decent trip otherwise!

Instead of putting the responsibility on NCL to build domes...... why not cruise during spring or summer and not in the middle of winter when it's cold, snowy, and stormy?
