Review summary

The ship is itself beautiful and big...and its stabilizer is fantastic; it was one of the smoothest sailings I've had on the high seas. But its decks are narrow (as are its staterooms) because they've put so much "junk"--e.g. restaurants, etc.) on the decks. The public areas were kept clean and well-maintained but the casino, which is dead-center on Deck 7 is smoke-filled which is a turn-off; indeed, the smoke permeates and seeps through to other (i.e. no-smoking) parts of the ship. Ditto for Deck 15, where we have to endure the smoke from the smoking section as we pass through from forward to aft for the Garden Cafe buffet and where passengers frolic. Smoke rises, so Deck 16, too, is smoky. Food the first day was off, and hardly ever hot or varied. Improved on day 2, variety-wise and temperature-wise. My stateroom was small and the heat malfunctioned and was never fixed. The shower drain was clogged and water seeped onto the flooor everyday--that, too, was never fixed. Because kids drew stuff in the toilets, other passengers' toilets were clogged, overflowing, and smelly. Complaints to Guest Services went unaddressed; the staff were contemptuous of passengers with complaints. Speaking to the Guest services Manager and the assistant manager aboard was like talking to robots. Two associates on their staff were mean-spirited and hostile. one sucked his teeth at and shuffled off, rather than deal with a customer. He also ignored a long line so as to avoid serving a customer. Another associate smirked and mocked a customer. The Manager and assistant manager backed their staffers,. The Hotel Director mario is a nice guy--but he is new and the Guest services staff run over him. The Guest Services Manager seems to be in charge, and she can get hostile, if her whims are challenged. She is unhelpful, uncooperative, as is her Assistant Manager. The Hotel Dirctor Mario needs to take charge and have the entire Guest Services staff retrained in the buisness of customer service and hotel management. I did not get the sense that anybody is ever fired. Moreover, the Guest services staff, almost to a perosn, needs cultural/sensitivity training or retraining.    Mickey Michaels

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

1 out of 5
Food on the first day was horrible--tasteless and inedible. Food prep and presenattion improved on the second day; variety of food improved. there were more fish each day on the menus, a pleasant change from last time. The crowded conditions caused long waits for specialty restaurant reservations and long lines in the all-come buffet Garden Cafe. Never enough seats in the Garden Cafe's buffet areas. Luckily, weather was pretty mild and we could take our (cold) meals outside to eat, when we were unable to find seats inside the cafe, which was often.

Onboard Activities

1 out of 5
Good for the very young and for teenagers, but every activity for adults was cheesy and sex-stereotyped. Felt like our cruise was for hawking and selling us merchandise as the activities were mostly income-generating for NCL.

Entertainment

1 out of 5
How is it that there is only one show on the Breakaway--AND THE SAME SHOW every year--"Rock of Ages"? Cast changes but this one was as bad as two years ago and worst than last year's cruise. The Burn the Floor dancers cannot dance; and the woman who sings Broadway tunes is pathetically untalented and off-key. As bad was the C-notes band--screamers and Reggae pretenders. Armin and Emily were just bearable--Armin more so than Emily. Time to refresh their act, and for NCL to book new talent. The comedy shows were not very funny either.

Service and Staff

1 out of 5
I have the names of two associates in the Guest Services department who ought to be fired outright for terrible customer service--in addiiton to the Guest Services manager and assistant manager who are contemptous of passengers who bring to them problems and complaints about the hotel and the shoddy condiitons of the staterooms. The managers protect their staffers, robotically, and dismiss passengers as troublesome.

Ship Quality

Cabin / Stateroom

Heating malfunctioned--as it did last year. Heating never fixed, despite repeated complaints. The shower's drain was clogged, and water seeped out of the shower onto the floor every day of the cruise--because no one ever fixed the shower drain. The toilet stunk like from raw sewage--and backed up and overflowed. The steward left a wet, toilet paper-lined brush in the cabin rather than have it replace. The studios are small and cramped, and maintenance is not good.

Ship tip

There is nothing special about any place on the Breakaway; its cabins are small, tight, and not well-maintained. This is the second time that the heating in my cabin malfunctioned. NCL Management needs to ride these cruises as regulars and go incognito to test the staffnig and many service problems.

Thanks for sharing your cruise.

I guess we just figured out the magic combo of services/amenities to purchase which makes all our trips fantastic on this ship.  Ultimates Bev, Dining, Spa balcony and Vibe pass.  None of the regularly mentioned issues bother us with that combo.  Shower at the spa, eat at moderno, relax in vibe and chill on balcony...winning w NCL!  4 more Breakaway Plus class ships on order for next decade.  They are only going to be more prominent in the industry.

I was just on the Breakaway in December and I did not have one problem, with staff or passengers. food was fantastic, nothing to complain about, I don't understand how someone can have so many issue's , I would definitely cruise on the Breakaway again 🛳

we have been on Breakaway 4 times and headed out again in april. im still trying to figure out what issues some people are having. i know last march when we went and got the Internet package we had to wait quite a while for how to get online.but other than that we haven't had a problem. if you have a complaint you should wait till its less crowded. when we went in sept we had a problem with our room cards not working. we boarded and went right to customer service and it was taken care of right away.

I was on the breakaway 3 years ago and said I'd never go on it again. Unfortunately my daughters spring break is in two weeks and she's never been on the breakaway we're going. I've been on 15 NCL cruise and I do have to say, since my last cruise last June the staff and service is declining.

The breakaway is awful. Everything that is wrong with cruising as of late is worse on this ship. Smaller cabins. Less service. Worse food. More upcharge food and shows. Cruiselines are sending their customers looking for what they used to be
