Review summary

We decided to pay the extra dollars and try RC instead of Carnival thinking it would be a bit better.  It was not better and in some areas it was worse.  There were several days that the water was not drinkable.  My husband actually had edema in his extremities and elevated blood pressure because of the problem with the desalination system on the ship.  They did not deny the problem and offered bottled water, but the juice, ice and tea were not drinkable because they were also made with the water on board.

On day one we were essentially trapped in our cabin because the safe in the room was broken and it took almost 7 hours to get the problem resolved.  We were told we must be in the cabin when they came to fix it.  We didn't eat lunch though we later realized we should have ordered room service (something we've never done).  We did not get to roam and discover the amenities on the ship on day one.  We did not get to participate in the sail away party on the pool deck, etc.  And when it was finally fixed we no longer felt like doing anything but going to bed.  They comped us a dinner at one of the specialty restaurants but would not comp us for the Steak House, which was our first choice.

The service in the dining room was superb but the choices and presentation in the Windjammer Cafe was far below the Carnival Freedom.  The ice show was great but we much preferred Carnival's nightly shows plus comedy shows versus RC's one or the other.  The entertainment in the other venues was okay but nothing to remember.

We will likely take the Galveston cruise to the Western Caribbean again but we will go back to the Carnival ships and pay less.
