Review summary

Let me begin by saying I that I have been a true supporter of MSC since sailing on the Divina in December 2016 when they had just entered the US market. This recent cruise was my 6th with MSC, although first on Meraviglia, and up until now I have raved about them to friends and family. The negative experience began on day 1 after a rough embarkation, and finding the cabin not ready when it should have been, we patiently awaited the arrival of our checked luggage. By 6:30pm only 1 bag had arrived to the room. We went to dinner wearing what we had boarded the ship in. Upon returning to the cabin from dinner, the room was not made up for evening and the remaining bags had still not arrived. By 10:30pm the bags had still not arrived to room. Our room steward offered no assistance through this ordeal. We were told to go to guests services. Guest services attempted to assist in the location of the missing luggage. Ultimately we found it by walking the entire hallway to discover the bags were 20 cabins away outside of the wrong room. On top of that one of the bags was damaged. How long would our bags have sat in the hallway outside of the wrong room if we would not have gone looking for them? Again, how could no one notice this or even care? All in all we spent more time in the long line at guest services daily than we should have had to. My family and I made the best of the vacation because ultimately it is about being together. It was disappointing that there were so many issues caused stress during what should have been a relaxing week. After the experiences on this cruise it will be a while before we sail with MSC again. There was so much confusion and misinformation given and no one seemed to be in charge. MSC and the crew of the Meraviglia were completely unprepared for a sold out cruise and the number of guests who were onboard.

Embarkation

1 out of 5
Once we made it through the very long line for security, there was no organization to the check in, not by deck, and no priority line for suite guests or diamond members, it was all one more long line. Upon checking in my room key could not be found. This then took extra long as they needed to verify I had a ticket! This was a new experience. I had checked in online with all of my information and no key at check in. When I was handed my new key it did not reflect my Voyager’s Club status and I was told they could not find it. Again, it was all there as I completed the online check in. I was told I would have to go to guest services upon boarding the ship to get a new key card and confirm my status.

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

3 out of 5
Upon boarding, there was a long line for speciality dining reservations even for those who had already pre-purchased a dining package. We purchased an unlimited dining package online prior to sailing. Upon attempting to make reservations for the week we were notified that we could only use the package at Butcher’s Cut twice throughout the week and we couldn’t use the prepaid package for dinner on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day. We have sailed on MSC previously, and have used a prepaid package on a holiday so we knew this was not a true statement. It was a deceptive attempt to upsell a special holiday meal. After a visit to guest services to confirm that we were given misinformation, we were able to book our Christmas Eve and Christmas Day dinners at the specialty restaurants using our unlimited package. Food is not unlimited in the specialty restaurants with a dining package; there is a tasting menu that you are required to order one starter, one main and one dessert from. Anything extra ordered in the restaurant is charged to your account. The dining staff in the speciality restaurants seemed overworked and we were consistently told they were shorthanded. It became obvious about midway through the cruise that many staff were sick as those remaining to work were masked. The buffet always has pizza available, which I do believe is the best at sea. The bar staff in the sky lounge and the tv studio were bright spots. We had the premium extra drink package and they kept our glasses full. There were other bars throughout the ship where it seemed getting drinks was a bother and bar staff was tired and overwhelmed. I am unsure why large bottles of water seemed to be difficult to get and the bar staff only wanted to give away the smaller ones.

Onboard Activities

2 out of 5
Our older teenager was enjoying karaoke each night, and those attending seemed to be enjoying the group of teenagers that were having fun and cheering on other guests. On Day 5, the crew suddenly decided to change the rules and tell them there was a minimum age to be able to sing. This was infuriating for everyone as the venue and the experience had been so much fun all week and out of no where to create an age ruling. It did not go over well with the adults and we were able to get it corrected for the evening, but just added more stress to the week.

Entertainment

1 out of 5
The broadway style shows were in the main theater were outdated and song choice was odd. We did chose not to pay to attend the cirque shows that cost extra. There were football games being shown at pool and pub with music played over them and no volume. One Sunday night NFL game was advertised to be shown at the pub and when we got there to watch on the small screens at the bar there was a live musical performer in the pub at the same time!

Service and Staff

1 out of 5
Aside from a handful of bartenders, the crew members were not very friendly or willing to assist. In one particular trip to guest services I was told by one agent that I was not the only with problems and that everyone had problems. I suppose that will be evident in the reviews that follow in the weeks ahead.

Ship Quality

5 out of 5
I did love the design of this ship. The spaces make sense and it is a beautiful ship. It was also one of the most immaculate ships I have been on as far as cleanliness.

Cabin / Stateroom

4 out of 5
Announcement for staterooms ready made around 2.15pm. We arrived at our cabin to find the room steward still cleaning. Again, a clear sign of the lack of communication among the crew and management. Unlike so many other cruises that we have been on there was no welcome letter, snacks or anything else to be found in the room. Absolutely nothing for diamond member status as we have found on other MSC ships and other cruise lines. We had to convince the room steward on day 2 that we should have been given robes and slippers for diamond status which he hesitantly brought. Our balcony room was standard size and was cleaned twice each day after day 1.

Ship tip

Avoid the stress on your vacation and skip the Meraviglia

Ports of call

Belize City, Belize

1 out of 5
Waited in the theater for almost 2 hours for tender service to begin. Even with the rainy weather it seemed they were trying to force the tenders and excursions to move forward as they were all canceled the previous day.

Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve, Bahamas

4 out of 5
This was not our first time on the island and all of our previous experiences have been positive. Once again staff was unprepared for the number of people that would descend upon the island for the day. No drink service on the island even for the cabanas. Lunch line on island was 45 minutes long the entire time it was open, which was only for a few hours. The lines for the few free food trucks with burgers and fries were long as well.

Disembarkation

3 out of 5
We were given very little information on the walk off express disembarkation. We did not even know what deck. We made a guess and found a very long line. I will say at the very least the line was well organized. Once the ship was cleared the line moved fairly quickly and it was a smooth process.

Sorry this cruise didn’t meet the standards you’ve come to expect from MSC. Hopefully, your next cruise will be better.

The lesson I learned from this......go to Customer Service desk if you have an issue.

I can only hope msc gets it together. Other than the ship itself there hasn't been many positive reviews. I may reconsider sailing with them in September

I have always wanted to do a Christmas cruise. Not sure now. I don't think I have read a good review from any of the lines during Christmas. Sounds like none were really prepared for full capacity.

I don't think I have read one good review of people cruising during Christmas. All the cost friendly cruise lines were packed and stretched. I might suggest Disney cruise line for a Christmas cruise

To escape crowds during school holiday periods requires a ship which, even at full capacity, has higher space per passenger, which means a higher cruise cost. If you must cruise during school holidays maybe Celebrity or Disney will give you the experience you seek.

I agree with everything you said about MSC except for the pizza. I thought it was average at best with little cheese/topplings and a sour tomato taste. Maybe it is just authentic Italian and I'm used to American.

While we would love to cruise during the low season when school is in session or it is not a holiday, that is not an option with our careers and school aged children. The timing of travel however is not an excuse for a negative experience as we know to expect crowds and are ourselves prepared for that. The customer service or lack there of and other issues that we experienced should not be considered the norm or acceptable. The cruise lines should be able to plan for and manage the guest experience during holidays and even at full capacity, and we have been on many cruises that have done so under the same circumstances.

Oops sorry 😞 thanks

Never cruise during Christmas or when schools are out for a better experience.

Sorry that the plan did not come together for you, but at least you got some of the garbage fixed.
