CAUTION: If you happen to miss the ship at a foreign port and you have to fly home, you'll need a passport. Then it becomes a stressful situation where you have to get an emergency passport and incur more fees when you could have had a passport from the start.

no, it's good to have for emergency but you can get by with a birth certificate and driver's license
