Review summary

We enjoyed this cruise so much! Service and food was amazing!! We enjoyed every meal that we had in the dining room! So many good choices. The dishes turned out to be better than their descriptions! Order the sorbet at dinner- a different flavor every night and each one was delicious! We tipped a lot along the way- $1 here and there and we had impeccable service. I know there’s a service charge already but when it’s spread amongst the staff- it’s just not enough. They deserve more and they immensely appreciate it when you give a little extra. They made my 4 year old feel like he was at a family reunion. They made things for him, danced with him, played with him, taught him games, performed magic tricks, gave him free gelato, and unlimited high fives and fist bumps. He really enjoyed our vacation and so did we! Be polite and patient and smile!

Embarkation

Port Canaveral is the best cruise terminal that we’ve ever used and we’ve done 4. We got there around 11am. Parking was a breeze- covered deck right there. We unloaded, husband parked (cost $136 for a 7 night cruise) and we went in. You can take prepackaged factory sealed snacks through this terminal. Luckily, they even let my toddler take in his sippy cup full of orange juice. They were very nice and friendly. Traveled with my Chinese in-laws, husband and young son. Embarkation was quick considering we had to get my 4 year old tested since he couldn’t be vaccinated before the cruise. It took about 10 minutes- super quick and painless. We were on the ship within an hour of arriving at the port. We were very pleased with how easy, non crowded, drama free this port was- nothing like Miami. As soon as we got on board- they put a wristband on our child to wear the duration of the cruise for security purposes and in case we wanted to use the baby care mini club services. There were only 1,100 on board this week. It made it super easy to embark and walk straight to the buffet for lunch! Our staterooms were ready by 1pm! Our luggage was delivered by 3pm.

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

Sports Bar

Great service but they don’t open until 2pm or 4pm most days. Fish and chips & wings were really good but you pay extra for those and the portions are small. You should get two pieces of fish for $9 and not just one little piece. The dining room actually had fish and chips for lunch one day and they were even better and twice the portion! So good. But the drinks in your package are included there. Plus, they have bowling and good WiFi in there! We got the unlimited bowling pass- “Family Fun Pass.” For $99 you get unlimited bowling, 4D Cinema, Formula F1 Car Racing Simulator for everyone in your cabin the whole cruise. Someone shared their bowling games with us the first hour we were on board and it convinced us to get it for our 4 year old because he LOVED it and the pool situation wasn’t the best for a young kid. The MSC Armonia spoiled us with the awesome splashpad for kids. :)

Black Crab Restaurant

5 out of 5

Some of the BEST dishes we’ve ever had during our 7 cruises. The other reviews really surprise me- because we are foodies. My husband is impossible to please and he found something that he enjoyed every single night. The Black Crab dining experience was wonderful!! They were the only venue that had my favorite wine- Matua Sauvignon Blanc. They were super attentive to us and our 4 year old. Service was perfect. We gave a cash tip to both servers the last night because they deserved it! Moises and Jordan took great care of us. The dining room food was far better than the buffet. The buffet wasn’t bad but it was nothing to write home about. Always found something to eat. Best pizza at sea though!! However, the lunch and dinner offerings for the dining room were some of the best dishes we’ve ever had on our 7 cruises! The pork schnitzel, conch fritters, fish and chips, shrimp and grits, spare ribs & polenta, tuna nicaucho salad (sp?) with ahi tuna seared medium rare were amazing!! Lunch dining only open on sea days. :( The meatball sub and Philly Cheesesteaks were GREAT!! They use an amazing hoagie roll for those!Sorbet was our favorite dessert as the flavor changed each night. Always something for my picky eater to eat too- pasta, bread, burgers, pizza, chicken nuggets, fries, pancakes, bananas, cherry tomatoes (his new favorite!) and the mock tail strawberry dacqueri! We also had our own dining table for our 5 guests- we didn’t have to share with strangers which was nice. They do the formal night and Italian night on the Days at Sea, so plan around that if you make reservations for speciality dining. Highly recommend both Sushi and Butcher’s Cut! You can even just go to the Sushi restaurant and order a la carte off the menu- their prices are REALLY good and the food is high quality!

Piazza Del Doge

5 out of 5

Best service!! They gave my 4 year old free gelato every night. He felt like a celebrity- everywhere we walked- they called his name and played with him and made his experience magical. We also loved the complimentary pastry case where they served donuts & crossaints and many others! Azlie took amazing care of us the entire trip. When you bring along $1 cash tips and use those throughout the trip- you get top-notch yacht club service!! A little goes a long way and it’s totally worth it. These people work so hard and don’t get paid enough.

Onboard Activities

Entertainment

Pantheon Theatre

The singers were fabulous. It seemed like the shows were shorter but they offered two different shows per night. One at 7:45 & one at 9:45. Luckily, we ate dinner at 6pm seating so we finished just in time to watch the shows each night at 7:45. We didn’t get to stay for every show because my little guy was losing it since it was his bedtime. There weren’t as many acrobats and aerial and circus stunts untilThe last show. It was mostly singing but still fun. Loved the ABBA TRIBUTE show and the variety show and my 4 year old loved the magic show.

4D Cinema

4 out of 5

Half of the chairs were out of service but we only needed 3 so it worked out for us! My son got freaked out and said it was “too intense” lol. They have 8 different movies and they are about 8 minutes long? They have a variety to choose from which is cool- kid friendly and then older kids. “Night of Toy Store” (creepy), race car, airplane, roller coaster, kid and cat friends flying around town with their jet packs, dinosaur (Jurassic Park style) too scary for my kid. I don’t think they sanitize the glasses after you wear them- they didn’t after us so that’s not great but it was a neat experience. I’m glad that we tried it.

Children's Programs

5 out of 5
We went to the kids club once but my little guy wouldn’t let me leave so the lady at the club let me go into the baby room with him to have some play time with the toys. It was nice. A quick little play time in a play room.

Service and Staff

5 out of 5
Amazing!! Most staff are incredibly helpful and kind! Especially the females. They just loved giving attention to my 4 year old and he ate it up! He felt like a celebrity. By the end of the week- each time we’d visit a venue- it felt like we were seeing our family there. Once you get to know the staff- if you are friendly to them- they will treat you like family.

Ship Quality

5 out of 5
Ship was very clean- they did an excellent job keeping up. Always someone cleaning. The layout of the deck floors was a little choppy- especially at decks 14-16. A little confusing but then again- I’m directionally challenged. They had very helpful signage for how to get off the ship at deck 4 since you have to take the stairs from deck 5. And of course- if you ever need help- just stop and ask someone!

Cabin / Stateroom

5 out of 5
Good amount of drawers but would have loved more or shelves in the closet. Two drawers on each night stand which is nice! I stored my PJ’s and other items in there. The sofa folded out into a huge bed for my 4 year old to sleep on. He loved it- he was so excited to sleep in “a big boy bed!” There are two drawers at the vanity- one has the blow dryer taking up about half the space- but it was nice to store my hair and makeup products in! The mini fridge had nothing in it which was so nice! Didn’t have to worry about asking them to clear out the mini bar to give us more space for our giant bottles of water and juice. TV does not get good reception - only 4 channels and they come and go- terrible signal. WiFi was very spotty in our cabin. You had to stand or sit in certain places to get it and as soon as you move you lose it and have to find it again. But I’m an optimistic- so at least we had it! The shower doors fold in giving more space. The bed is very comfortable. You can ask for extra towels and pillows if needed. I brought a pad of post it notes and left messages every day for our steward when I needed something. They can’t read your mind and they are spread so thin so when you need something- just ask! I left notes for towel animals, for our ice bucket to be filled, for extra toilet paper, for extra breakfast room order cards- and every time we asked for something- it appeared immediately!

Ship tip

Smile, tip a dollar each time you order a drink from someone new the first two days at least- your service will be impeccable, be friendly!! Bring post-it notes and a pen so you can leave notes for your room steward when you need something. If you have kids- buy the Family Fun Pass!! $99 for unlimited play for EVERYBODY in your cabin. If you only want to buy 5 pictures from photo shop on the last day- it’s $80. They only tell you about the 10 or more photo packages. If you have a lot of stuff then bring a shoe organizer to hang on the side of the wardrobe closet- it has a ledge at the top. Walls are metal. Bring magnetic hooks to hang everything on including wet clothes that need to dry.

Ports of call

Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve, Bahamas

5 out of 5
Order the umbrella ($12) for the Ocean Cay beach day. It’s hot. Careful in the lagoon cove area- there are sea urchin or jelly fish that give the slightest little stings. Didn’t bother me but ate my husband up! Several people complained about that. So, bring Benedryl! It is HOT. So, I brought an umbrella to use as a parasol until we got to where we were going because it’s a trek. The buffet lunch on the island is open from 11:00-2:00. The burgers and fries were good! They have bars serving drinks and bottled water. There was a Lobster food truck. Charges apply. We splurged and bought the lobster grilled cheese and the lobster roll. $12 a piece and TOTALLY worth it!! It was so good!! Came with a huge basket of fries. Watch for the seagulls- they are aggressive! DO NOT FEED THEM!! Island flora has really blossomed over the past couple of months! Banana trees and plumeria are so beautiful! It’s paradise.

Costa Maya (Mahahual), Mexico

5 out of 5
Easy to get off but long, hot walk. Used my umbrella as a parasol to shade myself from burning. Crowded and HOT. I was drenched in sweat within minutes. Bring a neck fan! Makes all the difference. We went to an outdoor restaurant right by the pool. They were spread so thin but got us drinks and food! It took awhile to get service but in the end- we had Yummy Mexican dishes with awesome guacamole and strawberry dacqueris. :) Then, we left and went back to ship to shower. We decided that we probably won’t get off the ship next time at this port since we’ve been here several times now (unless we pay for an excursion) because it’s just so hot and crowded. Easy to get back on the ship. If you stay the Port of Costa Maya you do not need your passport and you can take water and food off the ship. The port is its own excursion because there is so much going on from free swimming pool to dolphin swimming to bird sanctuary to markets and stores and restaurants and so much more.

Port Canaveral, Florida

Easy parking and embarkation.

Disembarkation

5 out of 5
So incredibly fast and painless. You get to pick your time if you don’t like your assigned time. Just take your luggage tags (delivered the evening before disembarkation) to deck 5 reception and they will let you switch your time. We wanted to change from 8am to 8:45am so we didn’t feel rushed. We also wanted to go to breakfast buffet which is open until 8:45am. We had too much luggage to do walk off. We brought a duffel bag with wheels so we could throw all of our last minute stuff in it the final morning and roll out! Then we checked our giant suitcases and picked them up the next morning after we got off of the boat. (You set them out in the hallway by 11pm the night before). The porter helped us get our giant suitcases onto a dolly and took them to our car for us. (Remember to tip them!) The line moved super fast getting off the boat and we only waited in line for about 5 minutes if even that.

Appreciate your very detailed review. I think I gained a few pounds reading about the food. It’s great to know about the youth program. People often ask me, but I have no direct experience. Glad you enjoyed your cruise!

Fabulous review. Thank you for all the details, that is so helpful. Glad to hear MSC is doing a good job. Fir the cheap prices and low capacity its worth another shot.

I hear ya! That’s what I tell everybody when they ask me about MSC. Review addition: This was our 4th MSC cruise and we’ve sailed NCL 3 times. Both different in many ways when you consider the little things but I often find myself getting the memories mixed up because a good time is a good time!! You can’t go wrong with “Kids sail free,” if you have kids!! That’s the reason we’ve switched from NCL to MSC. For the price, you just can’t beat this cruise line in my opinion. You still get great service, amazing food, great drinks, awesome ports (we got two days at Ocean Cay!), and a relaxing vacation. Some of these reviews are so depressing. It’s apparent that some people just can’t be pleased. Were there things that weren’t perfect- yes. Absolutely. That’s life!! But the good outweighed the bad. The silver linings were everywhere. Order the Frozen Toberlone for breakfast (if you drink) and your vacation will be magical!

This was our second time sailing the Divina- the first time was in April 2014 when MSC was just entering the American Cruise Market and we were on our honeymoon. It was my first cruise back then. Since then, we’ve sailed 7 total cruises so this one was our most current. The Divina still holds up as being a beautiful ship. The service has improved immensely!! However, it is not a smart ship yet. The MSC app is not available on this ship and the photo shop cannot provide an internet package for your photos. She said that she is hopeful it will happen soon. I’m sure I will think of more to post later but I can’t edit my review so I’ll just post my afterthoughts in the comments

Glad you enjoyed it. People either love or hate MSC. I’m looking forward to sailing on the Divina in October.
