Review summary

We spent over $2500 and feel our experience with Royal Caribbean, Mariner of the Sea was not worth the expense. Not to mention, we were double charged $308 for a gift shop purchase which, to date, has not been resolved.

Embarkation

4 out of 5
Boarding the Mariner of the Sea was great! We breezed through the boarding checkpoints without issues, and the greetings received by staff was exceptional.

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

3 out of 5
We ate at one speciality restaurant, Izumi, and the food and entertainment was fantastic! However, the food at regular dining and buffets were mostly less than okay. The food simply was not good. Royal Caribbean must do better in this area - recommend investing in experienced chefs.

Onboard Activities

3 out of 5
We did the pools and walked the track. It was nice.

Entertainment

3 out of 5
The ice show, comedian, juggler, Caribbean and Latin bands, DJ on the 14 deck were good! The other entertainment was awful - recommend Royal Caribbean investing in experienced managers that will hire exceptional talent.

Children's Programs

Did not attend programs specifically for children.

Service and Staff

4 out of 5
The service crew were very pleasant and professional. However, the day on the ship, the dining service was very slow.

Ship Quality

3 out of 5
The ship’s layout is good, and while the Mariner of the Sea appears to be an older ship, it was well-maintained and nice.

Cabin / Stateroom

2 out of 5
We were very unhappy with the cabin. It had an odor that smelled similar to old musty carpeting. In fact, to tolerate the odor, we sprayed the carpet and drapes with Lysol, in addition to using an air freshener and leaving the balcony door open most of the time.

Ship tip

Sometimes it took a while to get an elevator due to crowding, so if you can get on any elevator whether up or down, do it to avoid the wait time.

Ports of call

Port Canaveral, Florida

5 out of 5
No issues with the port and no excursion.

Cozumel, Mexico

3 out of 5
No issues with the port, and yes we did an excursion.

Disembarkation

2 out of 5
System malfunctioned, extended wait and long lines.
