Review summary

The food options were amazing and diverse. The shows were hit or miss but Celestial Strings was the absolute highlight. Server staff were great and very personable. The ship lacks many engaging activities so we had to entertain ourselves for most of the day until the evening shows came around. Overall the ship was great, the food was excellent and we would enjoy doing Mardi Gras again.

Embarkation

Getting through security was fast and easy but they placed everyone in a holding area that was disorganized and the speakers were unintelligible. Our boarding time was later than promised but once called we were checked in very quickly and aboard.

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

5 out of 5
The options were great and there was always something new to try. Main dining room was excellent and our server was phenomenal. Was surprised to find that Carnival had better food than Royal but that was definitely the case for Mardi Gras.

Onboard Activities

2 out of 5
Fitness center was decent, High Ropes course was excellent but the onboard activities was mainly just Trivia. Trivia all day which wasnt very interesting for my group. They did have the party atmosphere that Carnival projects with a daily Lido deck party experience but we werent really looking to partake in that. It felt like Royal had more things to do on their ships.

Entertainment

4 out of 5
Very hit or miss with this cruise. The Celestial Strings performance at Center Stage was perhaps the best show we have seen in years. Truly excellent. That was followed up by the magician at "M-Theory" which was absolutely abysmal! His act was a joke and continually failed throughout the performance. We didnt enjoy Rock Revolution '69 either since the music was not of our taste. "Voodoo Moon" was a great show though. The orchestral band was excellent and we always stopped to enjoy them when we found them on the ship. The comedians were also hit or miss and we really only liked the first one we saw. The other 3 were not funny and seemed to recycle the same jokes and themes.

Children's Programs

We did not bring any kids on the cruise.

Service and Staff

5 out of 5
Very impressed with the waitstaff at the main dining room. They were friendly and joking with us the whole time. They remembered our names and spoke with us often when they found us onboard.

Ship Quality

5 out of 5
Loved the ship design and always found it very clean or having someone cleaning it.

Cabin / Stateroom

4 out of 5
It was a bit larger than we thought it would be but still not huge. We missed having a balcony but the interior stateroom was perfectly comfortable. Nice bathroom and shower. Bed was comfy and great pillows.

Ship tip

The Center Stage show "Celestial Strings" was amazing. Get there 35-40 minutes before the show and sit on the ground level at the stage. You will not regret it. We wish we could have done the show twice.

Ports of call

Port Canaveral, Florida

5 out of 5
Port Canaveral is awesome. The staff is great.

Nassau, Bahamas

3 out of 5
Is it the biggest city out of the three ports. I liked this port the least of the three as it was the least interesting for anything I wanted to do.

Amber Cove (Puerto Plata), Dominican Republic

4 out of 5
Absolutely beautiful island with rolling hills and windmills. The port has a shopping center and a pool area unless you are going on an excursion. This was my favorite port of the three we visited.

Grand Turk Island

3 out of 5
This port had the best beach and a small shopping area. Lots of scalpers and panhandlers. Very pushy.

Disembarkation

4 out of 5
This was much more streamlined than I found on my latest Royal ship. The whole process took about 25 minutes from start to finish which was amazing.

Yep Mardi Gras has food everywhere! Great ship tip however the two times we were on board we found an hour ahead was best. Thanks for sharing.
