Review summary

I think cruises like this (mid-range) are more for families and heavy drinkers now. More like a theme park than a cruise. The upselling is relentless from a month before you get on the ship until the very last second. I wish it were a little more formal--a female cruise director in dark denim pants for the main show? I understand it's a younger audience now but the elegance of cruising is gone from mid-priced lines. What happened to the midnight buffets? When I take an after dinner walk around the deck the scenery now has to include a movie screen with "Thor" playing on it?

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

3 out of 5
We thought, throughout, the food was mediocre. It's one thing to pay an upcharge at a specialty restaurant onboard, it's quite another to see it at the bottom of the main dining room menu. It communicates that the dinner you're about to be served will not be "premium" unless an additional price is paid. There's plenty of food but none of it was great. The lunch on the island was frustrating--no chips or fries with hamburgers?

Entertainment

The comedian was very good and I appreciated the stage show with the singers and dancers.

Service and Staff

4 out of 5
Our waiter and steward were good. But others...the first night we arrived I had brought a special bottle of champagne and asked for an ice bucket and cheese plate or any other hors' dorves plate available. I was told, "We'll be too busy for that tonight." I tried again the second night and, still, the request was met with the usual, "there will be an extra charge for that," and a response as if this was a strange and unusual request. Finally, fifteen minutes after the time I'd requested, three plates arrived. Two had exactly the same slice of exactly the same blue cheese with a sprig of grapes. The third plate contained some stale saltines still in the wrappers. I would say much of the ship staff was friendly but not that helpful. And the upselling is ceaseless.

Ship Quality

4 out of 5
Old but very well maintained.

Cabin / Stateroom

The shower was like a lukewarm drinking fountain. Someone finally came and fixed it as there was, indeed, a problem.

I wish someone would clothesline my son because his farmtown self didn't know elevator etiquette. Oh Lord.

My wife and I are moderate drinkers. We relax and explore all the time on the ship. We did . We were on a 13 nts cruise in January. We were never bored. We just love cruising. πŸ˜‰πŸ˜‰

We are going to try Holland America Line next year, might make a big difference.

Wife and I agree. Do your homework. Do not book in summer or spring break. Just got off the Allure, with a ton of 15-16 yo thinking they could do what they want. Ex: waiting for an elevator with three ladies myself and two punks. Door opened, punks went to run on, stuck my arm out stiff, they ran into it, just stared at me as I told them "remember my face, if you ever show disrespect to a female again, next time you will be on your ass".
