We went about an hour into Nassau on a city bus (which only cost us $1. per person) to find some authentic Bahamian food. The food was excellent(Jerry's Diner) but I would never suggest going past the first couple of roads into Nassau because it is kind of a scary place. Go to the straw market and then go straight to Paradise Island! Beach is beautiful.
