Review summary
In general, the food on the Maasdam was excellent, as was the service. Although there was a variety of entertainment offered in the theatre, the performers, with only a few exceptions, were just average. The HAL singers and dancers were quite good, but only performed 6 or 7 nights of the 33. On several evenings, there was only a Natural Geographic film offered. There was a wide variety of daytime activities to chose from. Tendering presented a problem in several of the ports, with either rough seas or a very slow disembarkation process upsetting passengers. The ship itself had problems with the air-conditioning and plumbing, and even engine problems. Staterooms and hallways flooded, saturating carpet inside cabins and down hallways. This caused very unpleasant moldy and worse! smells. Snorkeling and swimming in the turquoise waters of the islands, relaxing on white sand beaches, and taking in the French Polynesia culture were the highlights of this trip. It is just unfortunate that HAL, which has a r long-standing reputation for immaculate ships, tarnished its reputation this cruise with the Maasdam, which is definitely in need of maintenance and repairs.
Ship experiences
Food and Dining
5 out of 5
Exceptional food in Dining Room, generally quite good in the Lido buffet, disappointed in our dining experience in the Pinnacle Grille Specialty Restaurant, it was more expensive this year and there were extra charges for some items. The service was impersonal and not great.
Onboard Activities
3 out of 5
Entertainment
3 out of 5
Only average entertainment, with a couple of good acts. The HAL singers & dancers performances were well-done.
Children's Programs
N/A as we didn't have children along.
Service and Staff
5 out of 5
Exceptional service from all staff members on board.
Ship Quality
1 out of 5
The Maasdam had lots of maintenance problems this trip.
Cabin / Stateroom
5 out of 5
A good cabin low down and mid-ship on Deck 5, so the ocean swells didn't bother us on the days when the waters were rough. Only problems were the air-conditioning remained constantly on cold, and there was flooding from the plumbing line in the hallway both forward and aft of our cabin. Very unpleasant smells to have to walk through on our way to the stairs or elevators.
Ship tip
With the condition the Maasdam is in at present, I would not recommend that anyone book a cruise on this ship right now.
Good shopping here. We spent a very pleasant couple of hours enjoying a drink & snacks at the Lahaina Yacht Club, doing our internet and gazing out at the ocean and our ship at anchor.
Buy French Polynesian francs at home before you leave, you get a better exchange rate at your bank than at an ATM on the islands, and better deals using the francs.
