Review summary

Code of Conduct: During my years of employment in the civilian world as well as the time I spent in the military there were always rules. Therefore I have no problem following rules. There were a number of rules that were posted on signs around the ship that, although clearly posted and in some cases in more than one language, were not followed nor were they enforced. Case in point; the Dress Code, and the lack of enforcement, I remember seeing a sign that stated that some type of cover up garment must be worn in the dining area after swimming. While I do not have a weak stomach I would prefer not to have to look at some obese person waddling through the buffet area with his large hairy gut hanging over the waistband of his ill fitted swim trunks as he approached and then the crack of his butt as he passed by. Another sign I remember seeing stated that shoes were to be worn throughout the ship; this rule also seemed to only apply to some of the passengers. You would think that this rule would be especially important in the buffet area. I believe that the Dress Code for the Formal Evenings was stated as suit and tie for men and dresses for the women, once again this seemed to be more of a suggestion rather than a rule; since many of the people in the dining room look as if they were on their way to Walmart rather than a formal dinner. Although I do not remember seeing a sign stating that children in the buffet area should be accompanied by an adult at the food serving lines, this is one rule that should be posted and enforced. On a number of occasions while dining at the Windjammer Buffet I came upon children unattended by anyone attempting to get food, or drinks on their own and leaving the food and the surrounding area a mess. Such that I bypassed that particular item and went in search of something else to eat. The cruise line could save a lot of money on sign printing since none of these rules seem to be enforced. I am not sure what my expectations were but the experience was more like being trapped in a crowded mall with no way out rather than a vacation. This was the first time my wife and I went on a cruise and I doubt that I will be signing up for another any time soon.

Food and Dining

I prefer quality over quantity so I cannot say that I tried every food item that was available at either the Windjammer Buffer or in the Rembrandt dining room; however the items that I did try were nothing to brag about; with the noticeable exception of the Oatmeal-Raisin Cookies. The New York Strip steak and the Prime Rib were both excellent cuts of meat and extremely tender (both were medium-rear as ordered) but there was little flavor to either. There were three couples in our party and all had the same reaction to vegetables served with the meals in the dining room, that being all were under cooked. The carrots were hard and barely warm; the same was true of the Asparigrass and the Broccoli, neither could be cut with the edge of a fork. The coffee served at both the dining room and the buffet was biter and required large amounts of sugar and cream to make it drinkable. I even tried paying for coffee and found it almost as bad. According to the website each person was allowed to bring a single 750 ml bottle of wine, which is true; however when I brought a bottle of wine to the dining room I was told that I would be charged $15.00 to open bottle. Given the size of the cabins it is rather difficult to have even a small group of friends drop by for a glass of wine either before or after dinner.

Onboard Activities

Entertainment

3 out of 5
While onboard my wife and I saw four shows that included the ice show, the Saturday Night Fever Musical, the performance by Mark Preston and a performance by someone posing as a comedian. Both the ice show and the Saturday Night Fever were very good and Mr. Preston’s performance was excellent. The comedian’s performance was mediocre at best. I realize that it was advertised as an Adult Show but it was nothing more than profanity laced babblings. If you produced a transcript of his performance and removed the “F___” word the entire monolog would be reduced to less than a hundred words. I am quirt fond of the “F___” word and use it to punctuate many sentences but even I don’t use it as often as he did. Adding the “F___” word does not make the jokes any funnier it only tends to make them cruder. Also regarding jokes the four or five jokes that Mr. Preston told during his show were funnier than those told by the so called comedian.

Service and Staff

5 out of 5
The service of the wait staff and the Stewart were excellent. Requests made to the Stewart concerning problems with our room were handled quickly; although the TV “Menu” function never did work in cabin 2111, which of course was not the fault of the Stewart.

Ship Quality

Cabin / Stateroom

A King size bed that left very little room to get out of bed, perhaps 12 to 18 inches on each side. I would have preferred a Queen size bed with a little more room to walk

I don't know the exact distance from the ship to the Immigration area but in the heat and up and down ramps it seemed like at least a mile or more

We love the LOS ship! We are a family with kids, and follow the rules as posted and also expect others to do the same. I agree with you about dress codes, but people all have their own perceptions of what formal wear is and what is appropriate at the pool. GJI, I hope you have a better experience next time.

Longer cruises have older crowds, Princess is great for us old folks, 3-5 day cruisrs are for children and younger adults, that's why they're called baby sitting and booze cruises

GJI- let them know about tour experience please. They are willing to work with their guests but it's better if you tell them while on the ship. We have had 2 very positive sailings on this ship.

Try Holland America. A tad more compliance. They turn people away when not dressed appropriately.

That obese guy in the dining room is the same guy you'll see somewhere on Cape Cod at the all you can eat lobster buffet bro. You thought you'd never see him on the ship but he's everywhere. He walks among us. Thanks for serving by the way. And know you're not the only one who was raised to appreciate a few manners which are universally understood wherever we may travel

Our first Transatlantic was on The Liberty- what a beautiful ship she is-anyway there seemed to be a bit more decorum on that cruise, not many kids on that one, most passengers onboard were late 40s to late 60s. We enjoyed getting dressed to go out for dinner every night.

The formal dining dress code is actually listed as a suggestion on Royal Caribbean's website and not an actual rule. I have seen them selectively enforce the dress code in the main dining room whenever someone walks in wearing something inappropriate.

unfortunately, no matter where you go, there are always people that don't think rules apply to them... as well as people who dont have manners or consideration for others... but...think of it as another form of entertainment! Lol

Dang I love cruising and try to find all the good not the bad

my guess it depends on the crew.. some in force the rules some don't.

Agree with you completely. Makes me angry seeing people reserving deckchairs and then go away for hours while other people can’t find a deckchair on the lido deck. No problem when people get some drinks or food or whatever. But there are people reserving but not using it for half of the day!! That is really annoying especially when the ship sails full and it is difficult to find a chair. Regarding the dresscode I think it became not more than a suggestion. No problem with wearing not a suit and tie. But shorts and T-shirt are definitely not ok in the mdr. Especially on formal night. Saw also people with swimwear at the buffet. Makes me think: I’m not hungry anymore😉 but nevertheless: cruising is still the most enjoyable way to spend my holidays. These days off are limited. So keep on having fun and try not to focus on those bad habits of other people 👍 that’s what I try to do.
