Review summary

We had a great time, but we usually do! We're there to relax and enjoy the food and entertainment mostly. We spent more time in the hot tub and pool then we usually do, and really enjoyed it. Didn't make Cozumel because of the hurricane, but we've been there numerous times, so didn't mind another sea day. But I will not choose Royal again. Norwegian and Princess are my top two.

Embarkation

4 out of 5
Typical long lines, but they moved quickly.

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

3 out of 5
The main dining room was great, and our server, Nicoletta was wonderful! We requested her table after the first night. Great selections on the menu, with "classics" offered every night, and specials that changed. The lobster on the last night was wonderful! Love that the portions are fairly small, so you have plenty of room for dessert. Drinks were horribly expensive! It's been a year since I was on a cruise (not Royal) and I remembered the "drink of the day" being under $8.00. They are now $12.95. The drink package still doesn't make sense for me, but my bar bill at the end of the cruise was almost $300!

Onboard Activities

3 out of 5
Didn't have a dance night, but dancing in different lounges around the ship. Hot tubs were great, and surprisingly not always packed. Pools are good, and love that there is an adult pool available.

Entertainment

3 out of 5
The ice show was the best, but it's really hard to see from anywhere except in the front, and the shows are packed. The Saturday Night Live musical was okay. The comedian the second night okay. The comedian on Thursday night was better, the adult show.

Service and Staff

2 out of 5
This is the first cruise I've been on (this is my seventh, first time on Royal) that the room steward was very poor! It seemed like they were maybe short staffed, because we rarely saw him, and the room wasn't cleaned for the first time until about 1:00. We rarely had him come back that evening. We didn't request anything special, so don't know how the service was for that.

Ship Quality

3 out of 5
Clearly an older ship, and probably will be refitted soon. Loved the promenade with the shops / restaurants in the middle, like a city street.

Cabin / Stateroom

3 out of 5
Typical balcony room. Beds were hard as a board. Good closet space. Tiny bathroom / shower. If you're a bigger person you'll have trouble using the shower.

Ship tip

If you're a new cruiser, it will be fine. If you've been on others, and have something to compare it to, you will likely be disappointed. You'll still have a good time, and the food is good, but I won't be going on another Royal!

Ports of call

Costa Maya (Mahahual), Mexico

3 out of 5
similar to Cozemel but smaller. Tons of restaurants, bars and shopping. The pool right in town was pretty nifty!

Disembarkation

4 out of 5
Again, long lines typical with getting off a cruise ship.

I love Royal Caribbean and I have been on the Liberty. I agree on one thing RC has to do something about the beds. Every RC ship I have been on has had hard beds.
