Review summary

The passengers I met is what made this cruise great. The staff wasn't as friendly as other Princess Cruise ships and the layout of the ship isn't to my liking. But over all I did enjoy this cruise. Not sure if I'll ever sail on the Island again but I certainly will continue sailing with Princess cruises.

Embarkation

5 out of 5
Always fast embarkation out of San Pedro.

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

5 out of 5
Only ate in the buffet and a couple of times for breakfast in the MDR. I thought the food was good.

Onboard Activities

5 out of 5
I enjoyed the trivia and the game shows. The fitness center is aft and mid-ship. It seems like a dungeon in there and I quit going. Worse fitness center of any ship I've been on. There were plenty of things to do and over all I had a good time onboard.

Entertainment

Didn't go to any stage shows.

Children's Programs

I have no children.

Service and Staff

3 out of 5
The staff did their jobs well but the people working on this ship didn't have an upbeat attitude like I've experienced on other Princess ships. My room steward was outstanding. Can't say the same for the other service people I encountered on this ship. But over all I did enjoy this cruise.

Ship Quality

3 out of 5
This ship was heavily modified to add more rooms so there's a lot less public space. It's a clean ship and well maintained but the lay out of the ship, especially with the aft promenade blocked off, isn't to my liking. On a positive note I do like having the buffet far forward. Great views as you enjoy your meal. Not sure if I'll ever sail on the Island Princess again, but one should never say never.

Cabin / Stateroom

5 out of 5
I had a mini-suite. Room B203. I loved it. It was an ocean view mini-suite vs. a balcony one. Not having a balcony was fine since the weather was rough for most of the trip. Having a full sized bath tub and plenty of extra room in the cabin was very nice. Hope to do it again someday.

Ports of call

San Pedro (Los Angeles), California

San Francisco, California

5 out of 5

Astoria, Oregon Did not visit port

Weather caused us to miss this port.

Victoria, British Columbia

Vancouver (Canada Place), British Columbia

5 out of 5
I like Vancouver but didn't do anything this time since I went straight to the airport. But I do recommend visiting Vancouver. Lots to see and do there.

Disembarkation

3 out of 5
Disembarkation and getting out of the cruise terminal can be a challenge, LOL! Vancouver is certainly NOT my favorite cruise terminal. Great views once you get on your ship and the city is fabulous.

We did the island in oct from la to Florida through the canal, I was really disappointed in the layout of the ship especially the small buffet area and the gym and casino were so small. The stops made up for the cruise ship itself for sure

We did the Panama Canal on Island Princess, it was one of the few sailing there when we wanted to go. Smallest cabin and worst bathroom we’ve ever been in. Didn’t like looking down on all three balconies below us, felt like invading privacy. Many men wearing nice dress shorts and polo shirts were turned away from MDR and asked to put long pants on, even a gentleman in a wheelchair, and it wasn’t even formal night. Room steward was great, dining staff was not. Too many other nice ships out there to ever want to sail IP again.
