First time on Royal Caribbean by kimberly3jones

Sail date: / Traveled as: Family (older children)
Ship: Independence of the Seas / Destination: Caribbean - Western

The ship was beautiful and definitely had a lot of activities however the food was just okay, my bed was horrible, I woke up with a sore back every day and had to take Tylenol for the pain. Wendy was the lady that cleaned my room everyday but she never made towel figurines for us and I look forward to those when I cruise. Overall all it was a nice cruise and my next cruise with Royal will be the Oasis of the Seas and then I probably won't cruise with them again.

Love this Ship by djeewek

Sail date: / Traveled as: Large Group
Ship: Independence of the Seas / Destination: Caribbean - Western

Independence is a wonderful ship to travel on.

Downfall, the service on Cruises is falling off a bit and I think due to the prepaid tips. Also the food was just fine nothing to write home about. The show

Grease was GREAT. The condition of the ship is very good, looks like new.

Independence of the Sea Cruise by jreneewilliams

Sail date: / Traveled as: Family (older children)
Ship: Independence of the Seas / Destination: Caribbean - Western

Ports of calls were great.  The cruise line lacked communication about what to do at ports of call.  We did not realize we needed to take towels so we had to go back to the ship to get towels after debarking at Labadee.

Cruise by kgrisanzio

Sail date: / Traveled as: Singles/Friends
Ship: Independence of the Seas / Destination: Caribbean - Western

The hot stone massage and facial were great. The food was good, but I went on this cruise so I would not be alone for Christmas. I am a widow at 58 years old. Even though I asked to be seated after the first nights dinner with other people it never happened. So I ended up eating all my meals alone, and the room service menu was very limited

My favorite part of the cruise on the Independence of the Seas was the ship it self. It truly is a beautiful ship and it is packed with activities. Rooms were cleaned and towel animals were fun. I liked the ice shows

Christmas Holiday Cruise by tmm127

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: Independence of the Seas / Destination: Caribbean - Western

This is the first time that we had been on a cruise during Christmas.  We had been warned to expect lots of kids onboard.

Boarding:  We drove our car to Fort Lauderdale and used the services of Park and Go.  After leaving our car there, they loaded our luggage and gave great service for my husband who had to use a transport chair for boarding.  This was a nice feature in that we had requested help for boarding and were able to pass the long line.  Earlier that morning we had been notified that the ship's departure and our boarding was pushed back two hours later.  Additionally, the ship would be docked in another port number instead of the original one given.  Later we found out that a young man had jumped over board as the prior sailing was returning.  So sorry to hear of a thing like this happening during a family's holiday sailing.

The ship:  The Independence of the Sea ship is larger than other ships we have been on but we found it easy to manuever. The ship itself was nice but the decor was not what I would call beautiful.  A term of saying more practical would be appropriate, especially since it has to accommodate so many passengers.  It is nice, and although the carpet a little worn, it is kept clean.

The Cabin.  We really liked our cabin 9620 with a balcony..  As you entered, the sitting area was first and then the bed and balcony.  The bathroom is of a nice size and the cabin's location made it convenient.  Our attendant gave excellent service.

The food:  The food was good but nothing spectacular.  We did enjoy the escargot as a appetizer that we could have ordered every night.  We had open seating/eating but ended up eating two nights in the main dining room at the same time and then on the last two nights, ate at the Windjammer.  I'm not sure just how special the speciality restaurants would have been.  Most were right off the Windjammer area and one time we were seated in one of them as the Windjammer was fairly crowded.  Other times we were able to find a table on our own.

Cozumel: We have been to Cozumel before and this time opted for an electric/pedal bike ride with lunch.  You could pedal your bike or use the electric motor and just ride.  The trip was along the ocean, there was a short demonstration on how to make rum, and also lunch was included.  This excursion was not booked through the cruise line and a short taxi ride was required ro get to the bike company.  It was enjoyable but we would have liked to cut the ride a little shorter.  Getting off and on the ship was easy and uneventful.

Entertainment:  The entertainment was good.  The singers and dancers certainly earn their pay and the cruise activity director was good.  We enjoyed the comedian and the special guest singer, as well as the production of Grease.  The music on the Promenade was fantastic and so glad we did not miss The Village People.  There always was plenty of room to find seats in the main theater and all seats had a good view of the stage.  We also enjoyed the ice skating show.

Shopping:  Was a little disappointed in the Promenade and its shops.  There was only one variety store where you could buy any neissity items you may have forgotten to pack, plus candies and chips and small souvenirs, etc. Of course, there was the perfume store, as well as a couple of purse stores.  There was a kiosk of watches, sunglasses and more purses, as well as a couple of jewelry stores.  For a large ship felt like there was not that much we were interested in.

Kids:  Although we had been warned that there would be lots of kids, the ship was not "over-run" with youngsters on the loose.   I had heard that the children programs were wonderful and many did not want to depart from them.  The children we did see with their families were well-behaved and we enjoyed seeing families together of all nationalities.

We enjoyed the cruise and the ship.  Although we did bring a dollar store wreath to hand on our outside cabin door, there were not many others who decorated.  A couple of doors down, they had put wrapping paper up with an battery operated lights along the edging but otherwise, most were plain.  The wreath was great as it actually helped to identify our cabin.  Although we did not partake in the swimming, there were two pool sections - one for children and the other for grown-ups.  It was laid out well.  Ditto on the wall climbing and volleyball area.  The only complaints would be when ordering breakfast to the room.  It was late, so plan accordingly.  We had heard that there were 500 orders that particular morning, however, it  is a large ship.  The second complaint would be one lady bartender who just could not make a good drink.  As usually one to just accept something mediocre and not complain, I even had to have her take it back.  It was the most awful pina colada I ever had.  She made another drink for me and it was terrible too.  It was just her as there were no other times we were disappointed.

Getting off the ship was also very easy for us.  Again, we needed help with this process and cannot tell you how much we appreciated the service we received.  Upon returning to port, we arrived at the original port number.  Just expect long lines and lots of walking.

Food was terrible, customer service eh, people we met were great by NinaVazquez

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: Independence of the Seas / Destination: Caribbean - Western

This was my boyfriend's first cruise.  I have been on about 5 prior with another cruise line.  This year we planned a trip with Independence of the Seas during Christmas.

This the first ship that I have been on where I actually did not like the food.  I'm not a picky eater, but one of my favorite things to eat on a cruise is escargot and frog legs at the sit down dinners.  The escargot was disgusting and I could not finish it.  There was no garlic and just a bunch of cheese.  The next night I ordered the scallops and they were prepared EXACTLY the same way as the escargot... inedible.

On the deck main deck there were no restaurants available for quick snacks.  The service was very poor. The bartenders on the main deck and the sky lounge are the only employees that seemed to enjoy working.

The ambiance and crowd on the Independence of the Seas is great.  It's a mature older crowd which was awesome.

All of my friends told me the food is amazing on Royal Caribbean especially when compared to other cruise lines.  I'm a foodie and I feel quite the contrary. I don't think i would recommend the cruise line to my friends.  I was pretty disappointed.  :(

need more onboard credit for each room. $50.00 is not enough for all the people we brought on to the ship. Dissapointed in that. Need better food in the cafeteria. More choices

Independence of the Sea Cruise 12/17/16 five nights by nicolemlong

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: Independence of the Seas / Destination: Caribbean - Western

The food was great in the Chop House and Giovanni's Italian Restaurants; little less desirable in main dining. Service was great and out does Carnival by miles.  They still need to increase daily activities like Bingo each day and so on... the shows were good; not excellent.  Poor communication getting off ship but that was due to a delay we had when we unfortunately had a passenger jump overboard. LOVED our patio off our room; never going back to inside rooms.

Independence of the Sea cruise by rodericknahum17

Sail date: / Traveled as: Family (older children)
Ship: Independence of the Seas / Destination: Caribbean - Western

Over all the cruise was great.  The staff that cleaned our room, Elisa, and the two men who served us were great, Fardeen, the ports were nice.  Wait staff in most of the bars and show locations were not very good.  They didn't come by and see if a person wanted a drink, but just stood around. Boarding and getting off of the ship was chaotic.  We changed docks for some reason and that added to the confusion.  The staff suggested that we use a new app to help proceed thru customs quicker but US Customs isn't prepared to handle this app yet.  Didn't like Grease and they had three shows of this mediocre performance.  This cruise was right before Christmas, should have at least one show with a Christmas theme,

Independence for the holidays by christyh1356

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: Independence of the Seas / Destination: Caribbean - Western

Overall, a wonderful cruise. The ship was nicely decorated for the holidays and has a lot of amenities. Food was consistently good and service very friendly and catered to all of our needs. There are a lot of activities to partake in, or not, and the shows were outstanding. The only downsides were that I didn't particularly care for the bands onboard, and I miss the Centrum found in the smaller ships.

Boring by mstheoc

Sail date: / Traveled as: Large Group
Ship: Independence of the Seas / Destination: Caribbean - Western

My favorite part of the ship was the dining and staff. Ice skating rink rarely available. The Grease show was good but, keep in mind is not a family friendly show. Casino placed in the middle of the ship which made it difficult to get to restaurants if your not a fan of smoking. The ports were beautiful and provided many excursions. If youre traveling with a young child under six their is not any activities besides swimming and shopping in Labadee.  Lunch is provided in Labadee by royal carribean on the island. Kids clubs are available and a family tot room is also available. Several Jacuzzi are available around the ship. No slides or anything fancy in pool area, besides the waterplay area for young children. I would consider traveling with Royal carribean but, I would not utilize this particular ship. It was boring. Their are night clubs, adult comedy club and a movie night. The embarkation and disembarkation are horrible. We were told to leave our rooms by 9 am and wait in an area to be called. We left the port after 11 am. Port staff are very rude and their is not a restroom in the port until you clear security. Which is horrible for those who travel with children. I would recommend this ship for older cruisers or younger cruisers who intend on drinking, eating and swimming.
