Very dissapointed. Even for the price. This was a Carnival experience. Food was just deplorable and awful. Service was bad. I got mocked by one waiter for ordering a complicated Caribbean drink one night. That was an added bonus to the drink package maybe? Steer clear. If you at all enjoy food on a ship you will be dissapointed and just downright upset. If you not at all care about food or quality and it’s not your thing, with exception of our roomsteward and bartender experience you’ll be ok. I’d say most of not all will be dissapointed at best mad at worst. If you are a a vegetarian vegan or have special needs for food just please stay off this ship. You will starve and eat lentils and lettuce like my wife had to.
Finally, having the Reataurant Manager promise me (didn’t ask for it) a special meal for my wife and I and then neglected to come through with it, showed me the Management just doesn’t care. You’re gone and they can dissapointa whole new group in 4 days and then send them on their way.
Stay Away guys. Please.
Embarkation

Embarkation was smooth and straight forward. At this point it looked very hopeful!
Ship experiences
Food and Dining
3 out of 5
The food on board this ship is a huge problem. We recently sailed Enchantment and Adventure 10 years ago with great experiences. We have sailed NCL more than 10 times recently and Never had anything close to this awful food quality and service. Buffet: food was stale and old. Food was without taste and salt content was off the charts (we expect more but this was just ridiculous). French toast was like rubber, literally almost impossible to chew, biscuits were a dry crumbled mess. Fell apart instantly. Across the board the food quality wa just awful. Dining a Room we hoped for a better experience. It was not. Example: Manhattan Strip Steak was a form of meat and texture that had me wondering if it really was beef. Ordered two nights and both nights was cold and not cooked properly. Sent back once and came out like shoe leather (requested medium rare and first got very rare and then over well done). Eggplant Parmesan ordered was a small casserole dish just filled with oil. We couldn’t get enough bread to sop up the oil. Salt was again off the charts. Fish enchilada for lunch came out and the soft tortilla was crusty on the edges like they get when stale (not from cooking). The fish must have been left out for a long time as it had the worst fishy taste you get with fish left out. It was ice cold. This was the last straw.
I can go on and on.
My wife is a vegetarian. There are NO identified vegetarian dishes on the buffet at all. When asked they merely said there are some green beans and salad bar without any care. I explained that vegetarians have certain restrictions as to cooking surfaces utensils pans etc which are not used for meat etc. labeling the food as such if it is prepare this way would be an answer to this but not happening. Dining room has a menu with a vegetarian symbol sadly one night NO meals had it for any of them and other nights maybe one or two.
From 4-6pm you can only get terrible awful frozen pizza or stale sandwiches on the promenade. Same after 9pm!!! That’s it!! You can pay for Johnny Rockets if you wish until 11. This is awful for a cruise ship.
I had an opportunity to explain all this to the Restaurant Manager. He seemed concerned and offered us lobster and whatever my wife wanted for a vegetarian meal to make up for the poor food choices and quality. He openly said the head Chef is struggling. That night we went to Dinner and the waiter had no idea about any special offerings from the Restaurant Manager. Don’t lie to me. Don’t shove sunshine where the sun doesn’t shine on me to get rid of me.
We left very dissapointed and will NEVER return to RCI and risk wasting our money again.
Perhaps RCI should start putting the whale tail smokestack on these ship, as that’s what they are offering for food and service.
Stay Away from at least Indy.
Onboard Activities
4 out of 5
Compared to NCL the onboard activities were weak. Coloring? Really?? We were again dissapointed by RCI from what we were used to on NCL.
Entertainment
4 out of 5
Bands, ice show, and Grease were great.
Service and Staff
1 out of 5
Room Steward “James” on 8 aft was of all our cruises the most miserable and least helpful ever. We merely asked for ice in a bucket and ultimately my wife had to go get glasses of ice and bring it up. He put up such a fuss and was like a lazy teenager who tried to talk his way out of chores. Not personable and could openly not care about us. I really should have decreased the on board gratuities due to him but wouldn’t want others to suffer. If I could eliminate his top I would.
On the last night I was mocked by the bartender when I ordered my wife a Caribbean drink that was somewhat labor intensive to make. Form of a mojito. That was my last straw. Maybe a bonus to the drink package? Thanks.
Ship Quality
4 out of 5
No cleanliness issues. Clean and well maintained ship.
Cabin / Stateroom
3 out of 5
Typical balcony room. No issues. On par for 10 year ship. Balcony is nice and deep, better than NCL Balcony rooms on Breakaway Class.
Ship tip
If you don’t eat or care at all about food choices or moreso quality you will have a great time. If food is at all an important factor or a factor at all for you please, heed my warning and find maybe a different ship or look into NCL or Princess which my family and I have had consistent great experiences with.
Great Shore Excursion to Tulum and Playa 5th Ave. Very high seas and ferry ride and boarding was down right dangerous. Should have canceled and refunded rather than risk peoples safety. Ferry was listing port to starboard 10-12 feet! Loading plank almost came off the dock!! People were sick on the ferry. Not good.
Bed sheets only changed between cruises? Do you change your sheets every day at home? If yes, good for you! You have a lot more free time than most! As long as they are fresh when you first come aboard, who cares?? I don’t think your list of complaints “ruined” your trip enough to require compensation. Loud music, food not up to your standards, no decorations and a broken waffle maker? Talk about First World problems!! 🙄
Day 7 of 9 day cruise.Independence is the WORST ship we have ever been on.Have not been able to swim as music at pool is so loud your ears actually hurt and you cannot have a conversation.I talked with all the adults around pool tonight and all agreed the music was WAY TOO LOUD,even after I had conversations with the cruise director and pool are supervisor and was promised it would be corrected immediately, guess what,it never was !! Food on here is deplorable, over cooked, tasteless, salty,no egg beaters in cafe but available in main dining room, you have to ask several times to get skim milk, the cookies and pastries are all stale store bought and frozen, the quality choc chip cookies are kept hidden unless you got to promonade deck coffee shop and secretly ask for a plate of fresh cookies. The cafe is not being kept clean, dirty rags used to wipe tables if they sometimes do,otherwise just plates are removed and tables left tacky, after 2 cruise with hundreds sickened they still refuse to at least disinfect tables.Want a waffle, try the 5th floor coffee shop, oops, forgot the only waffle maker is broken ! Christmas decorations for the kids ? Only one tree and a few minor decorations, put up by volunteers.Food is same every night, incorrectly cooked, horrible.Bed sheets are only changed between cruises,no real effort to please guests ! Maybe a few hundred letters to operating executives might give them a clue ! I want my money back, this was our 40th anniversary celebration and it has been ruined !! SHAME ON YOU ROYAL CARIBBEAN !
