Review summary

We just went on the June 2nd cruise and we were really disappointed. The food was commonly dry and rarely had a variety. The Ultimate Abyss was fun, although the Perfect Storm had lots of bumps within the slide and it always had long waits. Our wait staff in the dinning room was excellent, shout out to Ahmet and Artie likes to Party! We found out that the boardwalk smelled like smoke and it was like you in a giant ash tray, although Central Park was nice, and was pricy(the shops around it). I was just hoping for more, and I was expecting the crew to be more happy, friendly and engaged. Our ports that we went to were nice, but many of them were still recovering from the hurricanes of 2017. The deck space was very limited, even thought the have the three pools, you were constantly fighting other family’s for a spot, and that was the same with the buffet, and the buffet was in a really weird spot. Besides that, I have nothing else to really say besides the ice cream is no 24/7, the hours are 11AM-5PM. Very disappointing, but we had some fun moments, would not recommend it for people looking to book.

Embarkation

It was super slow and took forever to board. In San Juan, it took an hour and 30 minutes to actually get on the ship.

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

1 out of 5
All the food I ate was old and stale. The food in the dining room was decent, but often I had to send it back to the galley because of temperature. My son had to send his Mac and Cheese back 9 TIMES just to actually get a warm Mac and Cheese. It was ridiculous!

Onboard Activities

1 out of 5
The Ultimate Abyss was fun if you had no line. However, with 5,000 plus people on board, there was no where I went without people. Very sad, and the pools were overwhelming and overcrowded. Hard to find a lounge chair, I would not recommend to anyone with families.

Entertainment

1 out of 5
Music was horrific, but the Greese show was good. The waiting list was long, but the Greese Show was the highlight of that day. The Ice Skating show was terrible and so where many others.

Service and Staff

1 out of 5
Dining staff where all very incompetent. No smiles, I’m use to the Carnival Cruise Line care and hospitality, but it appeared that Royal Caribbean had none.

Ship Quality

1 out of 5
Terrible design, that is actually what I focus on when I’m on a ship. Crowded hallways, terrible decor, and very bad space usage. The Boardwalk was like a giant ash tray and Central Park was an oven collecting heat all day.

Cabin / Stateroom

1 out of 5
Super small, tiny balcony and little storage space available.

Ship tip

Don’t go.

Ports of call

Labadee (Cruise Line Private Island)

1 out of 5
Super small area, and the beaches are small and have sharp jagged rocks.

San Juan, Puerto Rico

Philipsburg, St. Maarten

Ft. Lauderdale (Port Everglades), Florida

Disembarkation

Even worse than embarking the ship. We missed our flight because the port didn’t have enough TSA Passport checkers. It was terrible. We also left the ship as early as possible so we would have 5 hours to get to the airport, but that wasn’t even enough time.

I was on the same cruise. I absolutely loved it. I never noticed the boardwalk smelled like smoke. But they did have a hot dog place on the boardwalk so maybe it was from there? Fighting for space at the pool is just something you deal with on any cruise ship. The best time to go is on a port day. I overheard someone at the pool in St. Maarten say that yesterday everyone was packed like sardines. It's much quieter when you're at port

Could that be the smoke smell if there is one?

Yes hot dogs are cooked on the boardwalk and fairly good. Lots of choices

Stupid review. I was on at the same time. Never had to worry about finding a pool chair and food was incredible. Went to the boardwalk everyday and never smelled. Some people just want to bitch.

Are they cooking the hot dogs on the boardwalk?

I too was on that cruise. Decided I do not care for the Mega ships. 2nd attempt on Oasis class. Going back to smaller ship..

I have been on the Harmony 3 times. The most recent, April 21st, of this year. I found everyone extremely pleasant and helpful. Yes, some of the ports are recovering from last year's hurricanes, but the people in St. Maarten and Puerto Rico couldn't have been nicer and appreciative of the tourists. The one thing I do agree with is, the Boardwalk did smell like smoke. I'm not sure why. Mystery.

Sorry to hear...we live RC and are actually booked on the Harmony for next March. Btw, to theohiostate, you do realize the Freedom is much smaller, older and less to do and less variety for food, right?

CruiseFamilyC2 I agree with you also while our cruise was not horrible it was not our best and we figured with all the hype it would be, nope and we sailed her her first 7 day from across the pond. So she was pretty new! Yes we are Carnival people but we are going on Freedom in October so giving Royal another try, if this is the same we won’t be back, I do hope it’s better and we have heard Freedom is much nicer. We love the big boats and have sailed Carnivals Magic and Breeze when they first came around.. so only 132 days till cruise and we are excited and will let y’all know how it was!!
