Overall positive experience. But will choose a different ship for future cruises
Embarkation
4 out of 5
USCG inspection delayed embarkation for several hours, causing a major log jam of people. Food in the Windjammer buffet was not good for that first lunch, with basically about 1000 people all trying to eat lunch in a space that serves about 200 at a time.
Ship experiences
Food and Dining
3 out of 5
The food on Grandeur was not as good as other ships we've sailed on with RC. The "marinara" was tomato sauce thickened with starch. So we quickly learned to avoid anything with marinara in the description, which was difficult on Italian night in the MDR. Service, however, was top notch. Royal Caribbean does service really well.
Onboard Activities
5 out of 5
Very nice fitness center. Trivia is always fun. The adults only solarium area is our favorite spot. Enjoyed tango class taught by the Argentinian dancers who performed in the evening shows.
Entertainment
4 out of 5
The band on Grandeur was outstanding. Juggling act was not good, and actually got somewhat verbally abusive to a lady who was heckling them during the show. Dancers were good. Late night comedian Mark Cordes (@thespousewhisperer) was fantastic. Enjoyed him very much.
Children's Programs
No children.
Service and Staff
5 out of 5
Everyone we encountered from the crew was super helpful, most of them smiling and cheerful.
Ship Quality
3 out of 5
Grandeur was clean, but the decor is definitely showing age (1996 build). Carpets in need of repair I some places. Peeling wallpaper in South Pacific lounge. Mosaic tile in Solarium in bad shape.
Cabin / Stateroom
3 out of 5
Clean. Shower could use a good scrub brush to remove yellow staining on plastic walls. Interior cabin on deck 2 is SMALL. Our 2 twin beds shoved together were little more than camping cots with thin, lumpy mattresses that kept separating from each other by morning.
Ship tip
We won't sail on Grandeur again. It's ready for retirement.
We went to the Chaccoben Mayan ruins and I'm glad we booked an excursion. The shopping area is tiny and we were done looking around in about 30 minutes. Store employees are very pushy. The tour guide for our excursion was excellent.
Again, some of the store vendors, taxi drivers can be very pushy. Wear a front wearing, small crossbody bag because thieves and pickpockets are abundant. We did the Mayan ruins on this tour too and they were different than the first, so it wasn't redundant. Excellent tour guide who crammed in extra events and made use of all of our time with him. Gave us a driving tour of the east side of the island which most people don't get to see.
